When you think of China and something going underground (not the Paul Weller song) you automatically think of some political group, but CULT YOUTH - Indie Comic Group is an fascinating comic group from China. Dazed & Confused comissioned a video short /documentary highlighting the 'micro-culture' within Chinese Youth the group has brought. I had the privlage of going to China in 2009 and capitalism is alive and well in the country, but what I like about this group is ethos its old school punk alot like I had years ago when I had a fanzine, set up bands for shows. Comics are a perfect way to show opposition to social and cultural pressures and when you have slogans like "the comic that makes rocks shed tears" and "mainstream comics are nothing more than smelly dogsh*t." you have to sit up and take notice.
fascinating short film its like someone finding a media for the first time and realising the power that exist within that media, enjoy....
