No comments:
Eureka Entertainment have announced via their twitter feeds (@eurekavideo & @mastersofcinema) the forthcoming releases in The Masters of Cinema series for the months of October and November 2013.

Proudly presenting films from 6 different countries, spanning 67 years, and encompassing classic Hollywood, silent cinema, and the finest in global art cinema, The Masters of Cinema Series is as eclectic as ever in its October and November 2013 line-up – a 5-release slate that includes directors F.W. Murnau, Kenji Mizoguchi, Howard Hawks, Fritz Lang, Metin Erksan, Ahmed El Maanouni, and Ermek Shinarbaev.

In October, we welcome Hollywood legend Howard Hawks into the series for the first time with his John Wayne Western classic Red River alongside the worldwide Blu-ray première of Fritz Lang's Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler. [Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler.] and a strictly limited-edition box-set of late-career films by Kenji Mizoguchi.

More cinematic treats follow in November with a gorgeous new restoration of F.W. Murnau's vampire horror classic Nosferatu (following a UK theatrical release just in time for Halloween), and the very first multi-film release in an exciting new partnership with Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving and restoring neglected films from around the world.

Across 5 standout releases, which include no less than 14 films, world and UK premières abound, with new restorations aplenty, Eureka! Entertainment’s Masters of Cinema Series continues its quest to release the very finest in world cinema, using the very best available materials, all with a meticulous attention to detail and design.

Managing Director of Eureka Entertainment, Ron Benson comments “Among other highlights, it is a real privilege to establish a new partnership with Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation in the US, and to continue through all of our releases to be part of a worldwide cinephile community dedicated to preserving and celebrating the treasures of more than a century of cinema.”

Eureka Entertainment Buys Rights To The John Hurt Narrated More Than Honey Documentary

1 comment:

Today Eureka Entertainment announces its plans to release the award-winning film More Than Honey in cinemas 23 August. The film asks why bee colonies continue to collapse worldwide and the UK release will feature a brand new narration from legendary actor JOHN HURT.

Beautifully filmed and directed by Oscar nominated Markus Imhoof (The Boat is Full, Les petites Illusions), winner of numerous Best Documentary Awards across international film festivals and stunning cinematography by Jörg Jeshel and Attila Boa, More Than Honey brings sharply into focus our current bee crisis where numerous colonies of bees have been decimated throughout the world with 50% to 90% of bees having disappeared over the past 15 years. With one in three mouthfuls of the food we eat and 80% of plant species dependent on pollination, the honey bee is as indispensable to the economy as it is to man’s survival.

The decline of bees could have an enormous impact on the environment, which is dependent on the insects for pollination. If there is no pollinating insect life, fruits, vegetables, and field crops would be obsolete, leaving the future of much of the world's food supply in question. Or are parasites, new viruses or travelling stress to blame? Seeking answers, the film embarks on a world journey to discover the answers. More Than Honey is the provocative yet touching tale of what may happen if our bees become extinct.

Ian Sadler, Sales Director for Eureka Entertainment commented: “Globally, bee populations are declining significantly and this is an issue for both commercial and non-commercial bee-keepers. Ultimately, if bee populations continue to decline, the impact on just about everything we eat will be enormous. Powerful, beautiful and tragic, More than Honey demonstrates the global nature of the problem, and in doing so captures everything from the awe inspiring emergence of the queen, to the death of a colony.”

More Than Honey will be released theatrically in key cities around the UK and Eire on 23 August 2013.

Film 4 Frightfest 2013 Announce Opening And Closing Films

No comments:
Big Bad Wolves from Israel and Indian Zombies signal global horror invasion at this year’s FrightFest. This year’s festival opens with the world premiere of The Ford Brothers THE DEAD 2: INDIA - the first-ever International production of a zombie film shot in India.

Howard and Jon Ford, the British director, writer and producer team behind the acclaimed African-set zombie road movie 'The Dead’ said today: “It's truly an honour to be the opening film – mind-blowing! Being at FrightFest for ‘The Dead’ was such an incredible experience for us and one of the highlights of our whole journey with the film. It's an awesome event with a brilliant crowd and we both sincerely cannot wait to see you all there!”.

The film follows the story of India-based American engineer Nicholas Burton (JOSEPH MILLSON) in a race against time to reach his pregnant girlfriend Ishani Sharma (MEENU). Burton enlists the help of an orphan street kid Javed (ANAND GOYAL) and together they make a perilous 300 mile journey across deadly landscapes as a zombie apocalypse threatens to engulf the entire nation.

Film4 FrightFest will close with the UK premiere of directors Aharon Keshales &Navot Papushado’s extraordinary revenge thriller BIG BAD WOLVES. Soaked in twisted tension, fairytale myth and seat-edged suspense, the film follows the lives of three men on a collision course: following a series of brutal murders: the father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a

vigilante police detective operating outside the law, and the main suspect in the killings - a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder.

Aharon and Navot said today: “We always dreamt of having a film which would be good enough to be shown at FrightFest, but not even in our wildest dreams did we think that an Hebrew speaking revenge thriller would get us there. FrightFest is really making history here. As a token of our appreciation we promise to give everyone there a night they won't easily forget”.

All the directors and some cast members will be attending the festival.

Film4 FrightFest Co-director Alan Jones commented: “Film4 FrightFest is delighted with our Opening and Closing Film choices. Both THE DEAD 2: INDIA and BIG BAD WOLVES represent everything FrightFest is about; the discovery, nurturing and celebration of vital new voices in the genre. FrightFest launched the Ford Brothers' THE DEAD to worldwide acclaim in 2010 and Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado's RABIES in 2011 became the only movie in our entire 14-year history to warrant successive extra screenings based on overwhelming want-to-see demand. So to welcome both duos back with their stunning new movies, both exploring unusual cultural aspects within a remarkable genre framework is an absolute thrill. These films bookend Film4 FrightFest perfectly and hint at what we are trying to achieve this year - the best platform to deliver our broadest, most diverse and most surprising event ever”.

Film4 FrightFest, the UK’s biggest genre film festival, runs from Thursday 22 August to Monday 26 August at the Empire Cinema, Leicester Square. The full line up will be announced on Fri 28 June. Festival & day passes go on sale from 29 June. Tickets for Individual films are on sale from 27 July.

Pre-Production Begins on Michigan Film, Papou

No comments:

Mother and Midwife Pictures is currently underway with pre-production on its feature length film, Papou. Starring international screen actor Yorgo Voyagis (Zorba the Greek) and Evan Kole (The Avengers), this unique tale of an imaginative young boy and his sickly grandfather has been the recipient of over $51,000 on a Kickstarter fundraiser, almost $55,000 in potential Michigan Film and Digital Media Incentive rebates, and numerous press acknowledgments.

The film is being produced by film industry veterans Michael Sinanis and Christos Moisides and directed by 24-year-old first time feature film director Michael Angelo Zervos. Zervos, who penned the story himself, states that his "intention is to create a film that does more than entertain for a day. The importance of the ability to captivate an audience doesn't end when the film ends. The film must create conversation that lasts into the future. It must engage on an emotional and intellectual level."

The film's large cast of local, national, and international talent took several months to gather. Zervos states that he went through hundreds of children for the lead role alone, finally settling on him after being impressed with his ability to think quickly on his feet and energetic vibrancy. "Working with children can be challenging," Zervos admits, "but the challenges are offset by the great reward on screen. Children can have a natural innocence that is magnetic to an audience and I think Evan is rife with this power."

As promotion for the film, the production company has hosted a Facebook application on its fan page called "Your Papou Story". This application features dozens of real life memories and stories about grandfathers submitted from around the world by fans of the film. The story with the most "likes" on Facebook by the month of June will receive movie related prizes.

The film is set to shoot in the Metro-Detroit area beginning in July. The production company is still accepting applications for extra roles more info here

Roberto Benigni To Star in Aki Kaurismaki's Next Project Set In Italy?

No comments:

The last time we read about Aki Kaurismäki was last year when his fantastic Le Havre was released. For his next project he's heading to Italy and he wants Oscar winning Roberto Benigni to star in it.

What the film will be about and the intentions of having Benigini are unclear at this moment but what we can gather the film will be inspired by 'the tasty wines of Salento'. This is a rather vague description however  Salento is part of the Apulia region of Southern Italy which happened to be where the 14th European film festival was hosted which the Finnish Auteur was a guest at. It seems the region has inspired the director which I totally appreciate (I lived nearly 2 years in Campania the neighboring region) but his grasp of the Italian language is only 'tourist' level so for this project to succeed he needs to learn the language better.

Originally Kaurismaki wanted Italian veteran Nanni Morretti (We Have A Pope) who unfortunately did not respond and now all eyes are on Benigni  who he described  who describes as a career like 'John Wayne  with a little Cary Grant'. If this project kicks off which we hope it does it's hard to see what direction the film will go, a film on wines may sound bland however with Life is Beautiful star Benigni onboard you can expect the film will be a mix of drama and crazy comedy.

Vertigo Films have announced the  principal photography of their forthcoming movie Monsters: Dark Continent has officially started.

Monsters: Dark Continent will be the feature debut of Tom Green who has previously directed the E4 cult hit Misfits with the script written by Jay Basu. The film is a coproduction between Vertigo Films and 42.

The movie is a continuation to Gareth Edwards 2010 international hit Monsters that starred Scoot McNairy. Edwards was nominated for a BAFTA and the film has won four British Independent Film Awards along with many international accolades.

It is some years after the events of MONSTERS. There are Infected Zones all over the world. US military forces are fighting Monsters, attempting to wipe them out. They are met with resistance but it’s not just from the Monsters. The cast includes Johnny Harris (London To Brighton, Welcome To The Punch) Sam Keeley (What Richard Did) and Joe Dempsie (Game Of Thrones) with Edwards and McNairy returning as exec producers.

Producer Allan Niblo for Vertigo comments, “Monsters: Dark Continent is a sci-fi action film that remains true to the artistry and intelligence of its prequel Monsters as well as providing the excitement, thrills and set pieces of a genre film. We’re very excited to see Tom Greens vision unfold”.

Producer James Richardson adds "We are delighted to be working with this incredible new team - Ben and Rory are two very talented producers, Jay has written an excellent script, we have a brilliant cast and Tom is one of the most exciting new directors coming out of the UK."

Ben Pugh, co producing states, “Gareth Edwards created a rich and evocative sci-fi world with Monsters and it's a privilege to go deeper into that world for Monsters: Dark Continent with Tom Green, Vertigo and a very exciting cast".

Filming will take place in Jordan for five weeks and a week in Detroit. Vertigo Distribution will release in the UK with Protagonist handling international.

Moments Worth Paying For Gemma Atkinson Supports Anti-Piracy Campaign In Iconic Way

No comments:
Two young design students from London have created an innovative take on anti-piracy advertising for the UK film, TV and video industry.

Leighton Pountney (24) and Omri Dvir (27) will see their idea brought to life in outdoor advertising UK-wide, as well across the Internet from today.
Called All for the Price of a Ticket, their idea uses till receipts – with a twist – to celebrate the entertainment value behind the purchase price of a DVD, download or cinema ticket. The campaign has been brought to life in the form of a film quiz called Riddle Me Th?s, which features giant receipts, each offering the public the chance to  solve clues to great films at FindAnyFilm.com, the UK search engine for official film, TV and video.

A host of screen stars are supporting the approach, including BAFTA award winner Adam Deacon and film and TV actress Gemma Atkinson. Their favourite films feature as riddles in the campaign, alongside clues from other film and TV experts, including film critics and bloggers.

Adam Deacon said: “So much time, energy and passion goes into making films and TV shows, so it’s always disappointing if people choose not to pay for your work. It’s great to see a campaign that celebrates the entertainment value you get back from your DVD, download or cinema ticket.”

Gemma Atkinson added: “It’s refreshing to see the industry creating a campaign like this with the young people it hopes to inspire. The riddle element is a great way to get people thinking about how film and TV makes you feel – and whether that feeling is something worth paying for.

The students behind the campaign first submitted their idea to the YCN Annual Student Awards, which spotlight young talent by challenging students to answer a live creative brief. The Industry Trust for IP Awareness, which commissioned an anti-piracy brief for the 2012 Awards, spotted the potential of the concept – and is working with its industry partners to bring it to life.
Omri Dvir, one of the students behind the campaign, said: “We’re thrilled that our idea is being turned into a real campaign. We wanted to get across the point that the price of your film or TV show is great value for all the enjoyment you get in return. You get magical worlds, futuristic technology, great memories and of course countless pub conversations.

Liz Bales, Director General of The Industry Trust for IP Awareness, which commissioned the campaign on behalf of the UK film, TV and video industry, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing Omri and Leighton’s idea to life. Our research shows that nearly half of young men today access some of their entertainment from unauthorised sources. So who better to take inspiration from than the generation of people we are hoping to reach?

The new advertising will form part of the UK film, TV and video industry’s innovative Moments Worth Paying For campaign, which spans cinema, outdoor advertising, PR and social media. It will feature in Clear Channel advertising spaces UK-wide from tomorrow as well as on Findanyfilm.com and a wealth of other film and TV industry websites.

As you can see from the top image Gemma Atkinson one of her 'moments worth paying for' was the iconic scene to re-create an iconic scene from Pulp Fiction becoming Uma Thurman to help promote a Moment Worth Paying For campaign. Below is an behind the scenes video looking at how she becam uma thurman and her talking about her support for the campaign too. Here at The People's Movies & Cinehouse do support the campaign we also believe something has to be done about the pricing structure as well as the overall experience of going to the cinema or buying that DVD or Blu-Ray.Though we might have the home release but let's be honest there is some great scenes from films over the decades that should only be enjoyed in one format that's on the big screen at your local cinema.

Raindance Film Festival Awards 2012

No comments:

The 20th Raindance Festival came to an end on Sunday night with its closing gala feature, Sal closing the curtain on a successful fortnight in the capital. The independent festival achieved record attendance numbers with Londoners out in force to take in the best independent cinema from around the world. Short films, music videos, discussions, workshops, documentaries and debuts made up an eclectic 12 days at Piccadilly’s Apollo cinema.

For some there was more at stake than merely the enjoyment of seeing your film play out to the masses as the competition element of the festival was decided and the gongs handed out. There was a distinctly Scandinavian tone to the ceremony with the recipients of Best Debut Feature and Best Documentary coming from Finland and Denmark. Scooping the former, Indebted is the downbeat Finnish tale of the lengths people will go to for money while the Danish documentary Ballroom Dancer focuses on esteemed Russian dancer Slavik Kryklyvy striving to regain his status several years after an injury forced him to retire.

There was success too for Love tomorrow which took home the prize for Best UK Feature. The film has echoes of Sliding Doors’ time concept as it follows the 24 hour period after a chance encounter between two dancers in a London tube station. Laurentie was the only film to pick up a prize away from Europe as the slow burning Canadian film was awarded the Best International Feature accolade.

Archipelago Director Joanna Hogg's Third Untitled Feature Starts Production

No comments:

Principal photography is now underway on Joanna Hogg’s third writing/directing project, following the critically acclaimed and award-winning Unrelated and Archipelago. Known as Hogg’s “London Project”, the as-yet-untitled film will shoot in West London and surrounding areas for six weeks. Presented by BFI, BBC Films and Rooks Nest Entertainment, the film is produced by Gayle Griffiths (My Brother the Devil, Archipelago) for Wild Horses Film Company Limited.

Cast in the lead roles are artists Viv Albertine and Liam Gillick. A British singer-songwriter, Albertine is the ex-guitarist of all-female punk group, The Slits; Gillick is a British conceptual artist and former Turner Prize nominee. The supporting cast includes previous Hogg collaborator Tom Hiddleston (Thor, War Horse), who made his acting debut in Unrelated and went on to star in Archipelago.

Hogg’s debut feature Unrelated won the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize at the 2007 London Film Festival in addition to the Guardian Best Film Award and won Hogg the Evening Standard’s Best Newcomer Award. Both Unrelated and Archipelago, released last year, garnered outstanding critical acclaim upon their UK releases, with the latter film resulting in Martin Scorsese heralding Hogg as a “uniquely gifted filmmaker”.

Hogg comments: “I continue to be fascinated by the blurred line between the comic and the horrendous - but depicting this in an ordinary, everyday context which is closer to home, and therefore more terrifying.”

The creative team behind the film includes previous collaborators: Director of Photography Ed Rutherford and Editor Helle le Favre both worked on Archipelago and Production Designer Stéphane Collonge worked on both previous features.

Artificial Eye is already on board as UK distributor and talks are ongoing with international sales agents.

The Ingenious Fritz Lang's DIE NIBELUNGEN To Get Masters Of Cinema Release

No comments:

Renowned for its ingenious special visual effects and breathtaking set design, DIE NIBELUNGEN [THE NIBELUNGEN] is to be released in the UK on Blu-ray & DVD as part of Eureka Entertainment’s MASTERS OF CINEMA Series on 29 October 2012

Perhaps the most stately of Fritz Lang's two-part epics, the five-hour Die Nibelungen is a courageous and hallucinatory work. Its extraordinary set-pieces, archetypal themes, and unrestrained ambition have proved an inspiration for nearly every fantasy cycle that has emerged on-screen since – from Star Wars to The Lord of the Rings.

In Part One, Siegfried, the film's eponymous hero acquires the power of invincibility after slaying a dragon and bathing in the creature's blood. Later, an alliance through marriage between the hero and the royal clan of the Nibelungen turns treacherous, with Siegfried's sole weakness exploited. In Part Two, Kriemhilds Rache [Kriemhild's Revenge], Siegfried's widow travels to the remote land of the Huns to wed the monstrous Attila, and thereby enlist his forces in an act of vengeance that culminates in massacre, conflagration, and, under the auspices of Lang, one of the most exhilarating and terrifying end-sequences in all of cinema.

Adapted from the myth that was also the basis for Wagner's Ring cycle of operas, Lang's epic offers its own startling expressionistic power – a summit of the director's artistry. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Die Nibelungen in a spectacular new HD restoration, released as a 2 x DVD set & a 2 x Blu-ray set in the UK on 29 October 2012.
