 Clowns you sometimes wonder why people are terrified of them maybe Joe Ballarini has the answer in his short Buckle. Whilst waiting for his next studio project the Dance Of The Dead writer decided to keep his mind occupied by creating this horror short starring Signal star Justin Welborn. It's birthday time and Buckles has turned up to spread some birthday but as you'll see they get more than they bargained.

Human Centipede helmer Tom Six joins the 666 Short Cuts To Hell judging panel

Tom Six, currently in the States shooting Human Centipede 3, will help select the winner of the 666 Short Cuts to Hell short film competition, fronted by FrightFest and Movie Mogul, in association with Horror Channel.

Six said today that he was 'delighted' and 'flattered' to be invited to join the panel and was looking forward to hopefully meeting the six finalists winner at this year's FrightFest event in August.

Rosie Fletcher, Total Film Magazine’s genre expert, will make up the ‘6 of the best’ panel, which also includes filmmaker/Special Make-up Effects expert Paul Hyett. Horror Channel presenter Emily Booth, FrightFest director Paul McEvoy and Movie Mogul’s John Shackleton.

The hottest short film competition around challenges aspiring filmmakers to make a short horror film - the best six of which will be shown on Horror Channel and at the 2013 Film4 FrightFest event. The overall winner will receive a prize fund of £6,666 and the opportunity to develop a horror short or feature idea under mentorship from Movie Mogul, for a possible 2014 production.

Entrants will have to follow a series of 'killer' restraints such as a maximum of 6 lines of dialogue, a maximum of 6 cast and crew members and a maximum budget of £666.



Entrants must submit their completed film by 6pm on the 6th June 2013.

Ellipse The Movie Needs Your Help , Film and Science worlds collide at the Royal Observatory

Love Science Fiction? Fancy joining Sci-fi London and help them fund a great little Sci-fi  Project? Yes! Read On!

Following in the steps of the vastly successful projects helped along by Kickstarter, Sponsume (www.sponsume.com) are asking Science and Sci-Fi film fans to help fund the final edits and special effects of movie Ellipse to ensure it achieves its full filmic potential. Filmed at the impressive Royal Observatory, the story aims to inspire and encourage interest in science and the creative arts with emphasis to inspire girls to engage with the science sector.

The film, which premieres at the BFI Southbank on Friday 3rd May 2013 is so extraordinary in its authenticity of scientific representation. Real research sits at the core of the film with data from NASA's Kepler mission and EXOPLANET app. Hanno Rein, from the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton has chosen several stars with Exoplanets to feature on screen and in the accompanying educational pack for schools written by Dr Lewis Dartnell and Marek Kukula, the Public Astronomer at the Observatory.

Synopsis

Directed by award winning Ilana Rein and produced by Louis Savy, founder of UK’s premiere science fiction event SCI-FI LONDON, the film starts off in 17th century London where Louise de Kérouaille, a mistress of Charles II and keen amateur mathematician, persuades the King to build an observatory in Greenwich. She encounters an unusual character, LEO (Brian Bovell). Centuries later, RO (Deborah Bouchard), a young girl also meets LEO and her interest in astronomy begins. As an astrophysicist in adult life, working with real NASA data, RO can investigate whether we are really alone.

Louis Savy, Festival Director, SCI-FI-LONDON says: “Science fiction film has been a key influence on so many of today’s scientists as film sparked their imaginations when they were kids. I want to contribute to making those sparks for today’s generation. Also, I must have seen over 10,000 sci-fi shorts and features coming through the festival and think it’s about time we made one!”

Award-winning Ilana Rein directs Ellipse. She says: "I love that so many incredibly talented people are on board for Ellipse – it proves to me that people recognize that we are creating a film that will spread inspiration through art. I know that women are vastly underrepresented in the sciences and we hope to help be a part of changing that in the coming generation. Having the Royal Observatory as a location is a filmmaker's dream and the fact that it's a true sci-fi story filmed there adds to the excitement."

Encouraging girls towards following their dreams in science
Women are vastly underrepresented in science, and we need thoughtful, positive strategies to engage young girls in science subjects at school. Ellipse begins with a 10 year old girl in a London park, and shows her successful journey as an astrophysicist, leading a crucial mission to the discovery of life in other solar systems. The female lead and real NASA data used in the film work together: Ellipse encourages girls to believe there is room for women in the sciences.

Crowd-funding films The producers of the film needed to fund this film as cuts to the Observatory's budget wouldn't allow for this type of project. Therefore the film has had to use a crowd funding platform, Sponsume.com, to help finance the project.

Love is Bittersweet In Slamdance Turtles Short

Love is a bittersweet affair but in Ian Wittenber's Turtles Short it's also an funny absurd might just make a heart broken person smile. Back in January the short film played in front of Grand Dury Prize Winner The Dirties, a story delivered in the style of a mock documentary which you could say love works in mysterious ways most of all absurd ways. Its a charming little film which will only take up 8 minutes of your life, not much to say about it apart from watch and enjoy!

Horror Channel, FrightFest & Movie Mogul team up to launch nationwide search for new filmmakers

Can you make a short film that can cut it in hell? Have you got some killer ideas?

FrightFest and Movie Mogul, in association with Horror Channel, are challenging aspiring filmmakers to make a short horror film - the best six of which will be shown on Horror Channel and at the 2013 Film4 FrightFest event. Watch The Atmospheric Indie Short The Devoured

 The Devoured is a slick atmospheric short indie horror from Wes Palmer and Zach Bokhour which was all made with the grand budget of $100 (£78)!

The Devoured is about a young man who is convinced his house is haunted and approaches a businessman who has a set of unusual associates who can get rid of those spirits.

It's a simple story and a another fine example of getting the best out of what you've got and despite glitches here and there The Devoured is a honest tension layered short film.

Sundance 2013: Watch Selection Of Sundance Film Festival Short Films

 Let's be honest there's fantastic film festivals around the world we all love to attend but for various reasons we cannot attend. One of those festivals here at Cinehouse(& The Peoples Movies) we would love to attend is the Sundance Film Festival which kicked of its 2013 festival just a few days ago but now you can enjoy a little bit of the festival from the comfort of your home.

Launched on the opening day of the festival (17th) the Screening Room at Youtube has been launched in conjunction with the festival to showcase 12 of the short films been screened in shorts strand. Sundance received over 100 submissions with 65 films been chosen further evidence of how peoples perceptions for short films have changed over the past few years. Virtually every big film festival now has a short film strand and here at cinehouse we know the quality has been improving, the importance of the films, the passport for up and coming filmmakers to enter into feature films.

I've included a few of those short films below  and had a quick look at them, they are dark and twisted like Guillermo Arriaga's (Babel) Broken Night.  A few days ago we previewed the official trailer for Chicago based film maker Sanicole's new Short film Text Tone and now we have the full 12 minute film for your viewing pleasure.

Text Tone is a Drama comedy After dodging his girlfriend to avoid meeting her father on their 6 month anniversary, the young lover wakes up to discover he is mute and must resort to winning his girlfriend back with extraordinary gestures.

Six months into a blossoming relationship, Corey (Corey Williams) receives a text from his girlfriend Snow (Ashley Snow) about meeting her father for the first time. Nervous about the meeting and struggling to communicate his affection for her, he resorts to ignoring her calls and texts. On the night of the dinner with her father, he doesn't show. The next morning, he checks his voicemail, listening on as adistraught and frustrated Snow admonishes him. Before ending the message she tells him he's lost the right to speak to her and wants nothing to do with him. When he attempts to explain himself in a voicemail, he finds that he can't speak. Mute and rejected, Corey exasperates all avenues to finally show her how he feels and try to win her back. Not All Fairytale Ending In Short The Little Mermaid

When you mention The Little Mermaid you automatically think of  The Disney animated film but like many literature classics they get adapted over and over again. In Nicholas Humpries short film he takes the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairytale twisted the imagery into something captivating,unsettling as the mermaid struggles for freedom.

The Little Mermaid is part Vancouver Film School’s “Compendium” series, enjoy the full short visually brilliant.

Deep in a barren, fantastical wasteland lays a dilapidated circus tent. Inside, an ominous ringmaster forces his prized act, a real live mermaid to perform for a group of grimy, working class spectators. The mermaid, though frightening, is but a lovesick, caged animal praying for release from her endless torture. Unwilling to surrender his meal ticket, the ringmaster rejects her pleas for compassion and continues to confine the mermaid to her stagnant holding tank. With nowhere to escape to, the mermaid must make the choice between holding on to the hope of freedom and putting an end to her abuse.

"Is There Anyone There?" Yes Robin Kasparik's Short Seance

Finally here at Cinehouse we're starting to post more great short films and we don't show many non English shorts but things are changing with this new film Seance. Hailing from Czech Republic, directed by Robin Kasparik Seance is award winning short horror about three people, who are trying to find the fortune of a deceased baroness through a spiritualistic seance. But things will go a bit differently than they planned.

Seance has a veil of macabre very traditional supernatural horror but with a big Gothic feel too, this is how old fashioned ghost stories would have been like. Maybe not Edgar Allan Poe but I'm sure Poe would have smiled after watching this.

Watch The Action Packed Sci-Fi Short Memorize

Whilst we may not always give the credit CGI deserves, Jimmy Eriksson and Eric Ramberg's action packed sci-fi short Memorize proves the technology has a few beneficial tricks up it's sleeve. If your opposed Identity cards with chips in them containing everything you need to know about yourself (good & bad) , in Memorize 15 years from now we'll all have chips embedded into our necks!

In 2027 The SSU - Special Surveillance Unit track all our moves to make sure no crime is committed, Earth is simply a Police state. When a SSU agent attempts  track down an suspected killer that perfect system to prevent crime show the agent it has 'problems'. As we slowly move towards becoming a 'Police State' I'm sure the Police force of today would love to get their hands on some of those gadgets and control those among us  who love to be on the wrong side of the law. Memorize is a very slick looking film with nice CGI touches and with a big doze of Minority Report thrown in, just remember don't think about things that could be construed as 'criminal' or you'll have The SSU breathing down your back!

Watch Alan Moore's Jimmy's End

Been a kid from UK who loved comic books in 1980's I didn't go for the typical Beano, Dandy, Topper,I just loved something a little darker, gritter sometimes surreal like 2000AD, Watchmen and V For Vendetta. It was unusual choices as I first went to primary school in 1980 starting high school 1988. There's one man I have to thank is Alan Moore the British cult comic book writer and his latest story come film Jimmy's End has appeared online in it's entirety.

Jimmy's End is a 32 minute short film which is part of a bigger project revolving around the same narrative, characters and locations. When you watch the film you can see a big David Lynch feel to it, very intense, surreal and full of sexual tension, it's neo-noir ala 1950's style at it's most disturbing. After you watch the film check out the 19 minute prequel Act Of Faith and spend an glorious hour in the company of Britain's finest comic book writer Alan Moore!

Watch The Brilliant Little Short Little Theatres: Homage To The Mineral Of Cabbage.

Little Theatres: Homage To The Mineral Of Cabbage is a brilliant little stop animation short Stephanie Dudley, which was first shown at 2010 Toronto Film Festival. Based on an Erin Moure poem it's simply brilliant, reminder that traditional methods of animation are just as effective probably more powerful than modern day CGI/computer based which lack atmosphere. Cabage as a mineral? Strange?! Watch the short film in its full, enjoy.....
