Love is a bittersweet affair but in Ian Wittenber's Turtles Short it's also an funny absurd might just make a heart broken person smile. Back in January the short film played in front of Grand Dury Prize Winner The Dirties, a story delivered in the style of a mock documentary which you could say love works in mysterious ways most of all absurd ways. Watch The Atmospheric Indie Short The Devoured

No comments:
The Devoured is a slick atmospheric short indie horror from Wes Palmer and Zach Bokhour which was all made with the grand budget of $100 (£78)!

The Devoured is about a young man who is convinced his house is haunted and approaches a businessman who has a set of unusual associates who can get rid of those spirits.

It's a simple story and a another fine example of getting the best out of what you've got and despite glitches here and there The Devoured is a honest tension layered short film.

Sundance 2013: Watch Selection Of Sundance Film Festival Short Films

No comments:
Let's be honest there's fantastic film festivals around the world we all love to attend but for various reasons we cannot attend. One of those festivals here at Cinehouse(& The Peoples Movies) we would love to attend is the Sundance Film Festival which kicked of its 2013 festival just a few days ago but now you can enjoy a little bit of the festival from the comfort of your home.

Launched on the opening day of the festival (17th) the Screening Room at Youtube has been launched in conjunction with the festival to showcase 12 of the short films been screened in shorts strand. Sundance received over 100 submissions with 65 films been chosen further evidence of how peoples perceptions for short films have changed over the past few years. Virtually every big film festival now has a short film strand and here at cinehouse we know the quality has been improving, the importance of the films, the passport for up and coming filmmakers to enter into feature films.

I've included a few of those short films below  and had a quick look at them, they are dark and twisted like Guillermo Arriaga's (Babel) Broken Night. Nothing better for a lazy sunday chilling out to films, so hy not short films? After watching the films below you can watch even more heading over to The Screening Room here.

Experience The Realities of War in The WW1 Short "Coward"

No comments:
Some friends ask me why do continually promote , support short films? My simple answer was to quote Michael Fassbender's line from Prometheus 'Big things have small beginnings' great films, filmmakers all start small developing into either fully fledged films or feature film directors. You could say Short films are like the equivalent of a singer starting at the bottom working there up the ladder of success through the club circuit waiting to be spotted. As technology improves so does the quality of the short film and David Roddham's Coward is an perfect example superb craftsmanship and why we should take time out to enjoy these wonderful films.

Coward is a sentimental throwback to World War One to a sensitive topic among those experienced the atrocities of the war the brutal treatment of the soldiers especially the soldiers with shell shock. We follow 2 Northern Irish soldiers Andrew and James cousins who go to war to serve country and make their families proud. Through their eyes we see the brutal realities of been on the front, tragic tale these young men need a voice someone to tell their story to show they where not cowards.

From the epic cinematography to a solid story line that gives these brave men the respect they always deserves, Coward is one of the best  28 minutes you'll enjoy in 2013.

Watch Terry Gilliam's Short The Wholly Family

No comments:

Missing something? A big gap in your cinematic life anything to do with a certain one Terry Gilliam? Probably. whilst we wait for The Zero Theorem to arrive later this year or early next year the ex-Monty Python member back in 2011 had been busy making a 20 minute short called The Wholly Family for Italian pasta company Garofalo. Set in the company's home town of Naples the short film is part of an annual series to promote the city starring Cristiana Capotondi, Douglas Dean, Nicolas Connolly and Sergio Solli. The film is full of Gilliam's trademark, visual, fantastical storytelling  but most of humor, the film has been playing at various European film festivals with best short film at European Film Awards and now the film is available online in its full glory.

Out of the blue a young woman appears in his desolate forest who is intent that the man will face his past along with the fate fit to suit what he did in the past.

Been a fan of the post apocalyptic films Overture does look like something John Hillcoat (The Road) even Lar Von Trier would direct. This is captivating and with the minimal dialogue it really expands the loneliness, terrifying the world can be

"Is There Anyone There?" Yes Robin Kasparik's Short Seance

No comments:

Finally here at Cinehouse we're starting to post more great short films and we don't show many non English shorts but things are changing with this new film Seance. Hailing from Czech Republic, directed by Robin Kasparik Seance is award winning short horror about three people, who are trying to find the fortune of a deceased baroness through a spiritualistic seance. But things will go a bit differently than they planned.

Seance has a veil of macabre very traditional supernatural horror but with a big Gothic feel too, this is how old fashioned ghost stories would have been like. Maybe not Edgar Allan Poe but I'm sure Poe would have smiled after watching this.

Watch The Action Packed Sci-Fi Short Memorize

No comments:
Whilst we may not always give the credit CGI deserves, Jimmy Eriksson and Eric Ramberg's action packed sci-fi short Memorize proves the technology has a few beneficial tricks up it's sleeve. If your opposed Identity cards with chips in them containing everything you need to know about yourself (good & bad) , in Memorize 15 years from now we'll all have chips embedded into our necks!

In 2027 The SSU - Special Surveillance Unit track all our moves to make sure no crime is committed, Earth is simply a Police state. When a SSU agent attempts  track down an suspected killer that perfect system to prevent crime show the agent it has 'problems'. As we slowly move towards becoming a 'Police State' I'm sure the Police force of today would love to get their hands on some of those gadgets and control those among us  who love to be on the wrong side of the law. Memorize is a very slick looking film with nice CGI touches and with a big doze of Minority Report thrown in, just remember don't think about things that could be construed as 'criminal' or you'll have The SSU breathing down your back!

Watch The Brilliant Little Short Little Theatres: Homage To The Mineral Of Cabbage.

No comments:
Little Theatres: Homage To The Mineral Of Cabbage is a brilliant little stop animation short Stephanie Dudley, which was first shown at 2010 Toronto Film Festival. Based on an Erin Moure poem it's simply brilliant, reminder that traditional methods of animation are just as effective probably more powerful than modern day CGI/computer based which lack atmosphere. Cabage as a mineral? Strange?! Watch the short film in its full, enjoy.....

When Sushi Fights Back In Japanese Monster Short Monster Roll

No comments:

Been a kid of the 1980's we got spoiled some awesome cult stuff from the decades that went before us, a little more than kids now get despite those cult films & Tv been more available than ever. From the 1960's sci-fi tv, Jackie Chan films, Monkey, Water Margin, Godzilla and creature features especially Japanese Monster films. Dan Blank's Monsterroll is certainly a homage to those Japanese films even a little Roger Corman a story which sees giant sea creatures who exact revenge on those who break ancient promises and Sushi chefs attempting to save the day who probably would love to make Sushi out of the monsters.

Monster Roll is a Proof-of-concept for a feature about sushi chefs fighting sea monsters. It's a crazy idea, but one we just really wanted to see made. Blank have made and they hope soon to make it into the feature and this is a well constructed film which I'll even go as far as saying the CGI actually looks really good. This crazy looking film keeps a hardcore fan of the creature feature films like myself smiling throughout the 5 short minutes hoping these guys make this into the feature, this is crazy fun!

Watch The Haunting Sci-Fi Short In The Pines

No comments:
Who says Science Fiction has to be UFO's and Aliens? Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell's short film In The Pines is a fine example of that theory, maybe even a debate to weather it should be called a sci-fi. What this film is atmospheric in the minimalistic way, compelling and very haunting visually I do get a Martha Marcy, May Marlene feel to it, minus the religious cult part.

Check it out for yourself below...

Watch The Awesome Looking Short The Killing Joke

No comments:

Never criticize a  Short film apart from been some really cool films that are at times superior to it's feature length cousin. Let's take Sebastian Lopez's The Killing Joke a perfect example of great short film about a woman who comes a across a red balloon attached to a small box  she opens leading to a sadistic clown hunting her down....

The Killing Joke is a 15 minute suspense/fiction short film about a mysterious woman that finds a red balloon tied up to a curious little box on an eery derelict street. Using classic elements of suspense and working within a seventies aesthetic, 'The Killing Joke' is an action packed film that pays homage to some of the horror movies from that era.

The piece was shot during four intense days of filming in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires. The micro budget production was shot using just two 7d canon cameras. The composition and CGI effects for 'The Killing Joke' required months of 'invisible' digital retouching to create the panoramic, yet claustrophobic atmosphere that pervades throughout the movie.

The Film editor was Sabrina Mottino.

Sebastián López wrote and directed the story, and was also responsible for all the impressive post and composition work.

Colin Devlin created the Original Soundtrack, working from his home studio in LA he collaborated on the project with Sebastian from it's inception, creating a wonderful striking symmetry between sound and image. This is the second collaboration for Sebastian and Colin, the first being an action packed trailer created for a fictitious movie called 'Vertical' that went viral on the net, creating a serious buzz for the young director.

Actors Gustavo Marzo and Clarisa Staracci Worked together to portray the intense characters seen on screen.

Watch The Metaphoric Sci-Fi Short SEED

No comments:

This is why I love short films sometimes more than feature films as final result compared to some of the crap that's plagued our cinemas recently these films are a breath of fresh air. Some the ideas may not be 100% original but script wise, visually, structurally superior asks the question maybe some of those feature films maybe should be short films or simply should have stayed short film. We're a little disappointed we haven't covered short films as much as we should have this year but things are changing starting tonight with Tyson Wade Johnston's Seed.

Seed is set in the year 2071, where technology has brought mankind to the brink of colonization on a planet named Gaia, one astronaut takes on an isolated mission and discovers unearthly horrors that could bring an end to human life on this planet. This is a tale of colonization gone wrong , a film that feels like a modern war film too, its a visual treat plenty of atmosphere most of all this looks a professionally polished CGI film worthy of  14 minutes of your time.
