DVD Review: TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY

TinkerTailor Soldier Spy, one of 2011’s best received films, is released on DVD on January 30th. Having garnered a host of award nominations recently, including a mention in almost every category at the upcoming Baftas, Tomas Alfredson’s latest film boasts one of the best ensemble casts from recent years, including Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, John Hurt, Toby Jones and Kathy Burke.

The film is set in the 1970s during the time of the Cold War, and the story unravels lead protagonist Smiley’s effort to investigate a mole within the British government who has been acting as an agent for the Russians. With a running time of two hours, it can seem very slow paced at times and requires a lot of concentration.

Gary Oldman plays Smiley and it is him who gets most of the screen time. However there are great performances from all the cast, and it is this which really makes the film a success. The other parts are small but performed well. What is not carried out in words or actions is made up for in expressions. The cinematography should also be applauded, as the film really looks like it has been filmed in the seventies. The backgrounds and clothes are all grey and brown hues, which add to this as well. The score should also be given a mention, as the piano music gives off an air of mystery and the tracks used are nostalgic, again really giving a sense of the time.

Those expecting an action-packed caper may be disappointed, but there is no doubting that Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is an excellently crafted piece of cinema with outstanding performances from an ensemble cast.
