Whilst at School and through Television we learn about the world atrocities but never do we here anything happen on our own door step and sadly it has happened and one of those scandals is covered in the new powerful drama ORANGES AND SUNSHINE.
The movie highlight’s the story of one social worker from Nottingham who uncovers one of British darkest secrets the illegal deportation of thousands of British children throughout the commonwealth and to Australia especially, programme that ran from the Victorian era right upto as late as 1970′s. Its a powerfull emotional of a dark history of this country that must be highlighted as the children when they arrived in the country were subject to pyhsical abuse as well as hard labour, even children as young as 4! But whats more devasting is the fact the children were told there parents were dead a frightening thought for any age and even to this day I dont even know if the government has even publically apoligised but dont expect the conservative government to apoligise they will do there usual “dont blame us blame them” attitude.
The Social Worker Margaret Humphreys is played by Emily Watson who looks to give a powerhouse performance, playing some of the victims of the scandal as adults are Hugo Weaving, David Wenham and Tara Morice. The movie is a debut feature for Jim Loach the son of legendary Ken Loach and Like Father (with Route Irish) and Son ORANGES AND SUNSHINE will be part of The Glasgow Film Festival when it plays on 25th & 26th February at GFT, for more information go to the festival’s website . Children as young as four had been told that their parents were dead, and been sent to children’s homes on the other side of the world. Many were subjected to appalling abuse. They were promised oranges and sunshine: they got hard labour and life in institutions.
