This morning The 64th Film Festival line up was announced with a toal of 49 films to be shown over the 11 day festival which kicks off next month on 11th May. The films this year are featured in four categories: Competition, Un Certain Regard, Out of Competition and Special Screenings which also includes the Midnight Screenings with Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris having this years honours of been the opening movie.
A Cannes Film Festival would nt be a Cannes Film Festival without some sort of input from Lars Von Trier and this year his sci-fi flick Melancholia will play in the competition category along with Terrence Malick’s Tree Of Life which now looks like it will make its world premiere in South Of France now instead of UK & Ireland. The movies in the same category include Paolo Sorrentino‘s This Must Be The Place starring Sean Penn, Nicolas Winding Refn’s DRIVE his biggest movie to date and stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Christina Hendricks, Oscar Issac. In the Un Certain Regard next to Gus Van Sant‘s Restless , a movie which was to be released last month but disappeared of the face of the earth and now to premiere in Cannes.
The full list of movies you can find below, there’s a massive list and some of the filmmakers I never mentioned but are making an appearance at the festival are Bruno Dumont, Takashi Miike, the Dardenne Brothers, Pedro Almodovar, Lynne Ramsey. Its good this year the festival has learned its lesson from last years fiasco of no female filmmakers in line for the Palme d’or with 4 directors including Lynne Ramsey with We Need To Talk About Kevin starring Tilda Swinton, John C Rielly, Japan’s Naomi Kawase, France’s Maiwenn Le Besco and the Australian Julia Leigh are also in line to win the trophy a panel chaired by Robert De Niro.
