2011 JAPANCUTS Festival of Contemporary Japanese Cinema, Coming to New York in July

The descent of summer on New York City means one thing… JAPAN CUTS (5^th edition): The New York Festival of Contemporary Japanese Cinema returns to Japan Society from July 7^th to July 22^nd for its fifth consecutive year. With 32 titles and 33 screenings, including 10 co-presentations with New York Asian Film Festival, the festival, now the world’s largest showcase of contemporary Japanese cinema, is our biggest one yet. This year’s selections take an expansive view of Japan’s cutting-edge film scene, from uplifting family fare to brooding dramas to eye-popping blockbusters and thrillers, and (almost) all are making their international, U.S., or New York premieres. Our celebration of Japanese film also features 9 special guests (...so far), including directors Masashi Yamamoto and Tak Sakaguchi and, yes, actress Sora Aoi. There will also be parties and giveaways, too. In addition, the July 20^th screening of Haru’s Journey, which stars legendary actor Nakadai Tatsuya and will feature an in-person appearance by director Masahiro Kobayashi and producer Naoko Kobayashi, will see 50% of the proceedings go to Japan Society’s Japan Earthquake Relief Fund.

The Festival has an varying selection of great Japanese movies on offer from New Family movies  such as Takashi Miike's Ninja Kids to brooding dramas, classic hits like Battle Royale, some of the latest blockbuster, thrillers, live action version of popular animes, there's something for everyone!
