Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest on the 13th of November 2010 after seven years of detainment, even though she won a general election in 1990. In total she has been under house arrest for 15 of the past 21 years. Her ideas, while not new, are revolutionary in her home nation of Burma, and her commitment to her cause together with her elegant poise has made her somewhat of a living-legend.
Luc Besson has taken note, and aims to bring Suu Kyi's turbulent story to life with The Lady, with legend of the asian-screen Michelle Yeoh playing the titular lead. The film is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, though UK audiences may have to wait till next year to get a look.
The Lady, starring Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis, is an epic love story about how an extraordinary couple and family sacrifice their happiness at great human cost for a higher cause. This is the story of Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris. Despite distance, long separations, and a dangerously hostile regime, their love endures until the very end. A story of devotion and human understanding set against a background of political turmoil which continues today. The film also is the story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma's democracy movement.
