Next month Studio Ghibli's last ever film created When Marnie Was There will arrive finally in UK&Ireland for it's cinematic run. It's a film that was released in 2014 in it's native Japan and since then we had the worrying news of Japan's premier animation studio going into hiatus fans worldwide started to worry about their future, post-Miyazaki. The future might be a bright for the anime masters as from the Sunny (or wet) shores of South Of France at Cannes Film Festival with the release of The Red Turtle.
The film marks Studio Ghibli's move into producing working with Non-Ghibli animators and The Red Turtle is a French-Japanese production with London based Dudok De Wit behind the film. This week the film made it's appearance at the Croisette receiving some rave reviews with Sony Picture Classics picking up the North American distribution.
A Short 32 second teaser trailer from Ghibli has arrived online and just below that is the Cannes trailer which was released last weekend...
The Red Turtle (La tortue rouge) tells the story of a shipwrecked man who becomes stranded on a deserted island inhabited by turtles, crabs and birds. He's in total isolation and grows to live with that fact only to discover a woman lost at sea and begins a life with her.
As you can see the style is nothing like Studio Ghibli but that doesn't mean it's an animation that's not suited to the Ghibli vision. Once again the review prove this film is worthy to be placed next to the studio's classics. It's dialogue free film that's hypnotic, poetic emotionally charged but visually beautiful piece. Alot of the aesthetics the studio follow but most of all it's a sign Studio Ghibli are making moves in the future of the studio.
No word on an UK distribution, however we wouldn't be surprise if Studiocanal (Studio Ghibli's UK distributor) pick this one up.
