No bones about it, Belgium filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne have grown to be some of the best filmmakers currently working. They haven't been shy of social commentary in their films whilst at times might not be prominent, it's always there. It will be the forefront of their next film a film based on War on terrorism.
During an interview at Lima Film Festival, the brothers next film will tell the story of an Islamist "fanatic" linked to jihadist attacks.
The brothers own country's capital back in March this year in Brussels. The brothers however were quick to state that the project was thought of well before the tragic events.
"We've been thinking about it for years," Luc stated, also stating the inspiration behind this project "We’re going to deal with a fanatical character, a character related to Islamist terrorism. For the past 20 years in Belgium we’ve had schools where people study Arabic through the Quran, we have Salafist mosques”.
“They’re the ones that trained today’s youth, telling them, ‘On one side you have us, the true Muslims. On the other side, the Westerners, or the bad Muslims who are not the way they should be.’ That kind of education leads to what we have today.”
Whatever you think of the world situation with terrorism , the project is certainly going to cause controversy. The brothers haven't hide from controversy before but this time things might get a little more sensitive. It will be interesting to see how they will handle the narrative!
The unamed film is expected to film late 2017, with the brothers next film The Unknown Girl is expected to be released in UK&Ireland on 2nd December 2016.
