Verve Picture Bringing Home (Yurt) 'Home' June on DVD

Verve Pictures have announced  the UK DVD Release of  HOME (Yurt), winner of  The Golden Wings Digital Digiturk Distribution Award at the recent London Turkish Film Festival.

The first feature to be written and directed by actor Muzaffer Özdemir, best known for his roles in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's THE SMALL TOWN, CLOUDS OF MAY and DISTANT, for which he won the Cannes Best Actor Award, HOME (Yurt) is a beautifully composed meditation on memories and a changing world. Doğan, a pessimistic and neurotic architect, longing for his homeland, revisits the countryside of his childhood for the first time in many years. His search for the familiar, however, is an elusive one and in this modern technological age he quickly discovers that time which once stood still is now fleeting, and that the tranquillity of familiar landscapes is fading.

Poetic and resonant, HOME (Yurt) is a serene depiction of one man's journey to find his own sense of peace amidst the conflict between nature and the ever intrusive modern age.

Cannes Festival Winning Post Tenebras Lux A Home July UK Release

Drakes Avenue Pictures and The Independent Cinema Office and are pleased to announce that Carlos Reygadas’ (Battle in Heaven, Silent Light) Post Tenebras Lux will be released in UK on DVD and on Blu Ray for the first time from 22 July.

Reygadas picked up Best Director in Cannes last year for Post Tenebras Lux, perhaps his most personal and complex work to-date. A gorgeous, allusive mood piece examining marriage, poverty, class and gender, the film also looks at our place in nature and how evil lives with us in the most intimate and ordinary of places.

Juan (Adolfo Jiménez Castro) is a wealthy industrialist who has chosen to live with his wife and two children away from the trappings of wealth and the city. Yet isolation in this superficially idyllic rural landscape seems to have brought little peace to his world. Juan’s marriage to Natalia (Nathalia Acevedo) is suffering under the strain of sexual ennui, the banal rigors of bringing up young children and living in a community where he is clearly an outsider.

Its central theme, signposted in an audacious manner very early on, is Juan’s struggle to morally navigate the welter of everyday decisions we are all forced to make in life. The morality of family life is further complicated by Juan’s post-colonial Mexican ethnicity and position as an employer and elite landowner in a country with an increasingly divergent wealth divide.

Largely non-linear in its structure, preferring instead to show a series of striking images from the past, present and possible futures, Post Tenebras Lux repays repeat viewings allowing its myriad ideas to slowly rise to the fore. What lingers long after viewing are not only the more striking images, but also the subtler aspects of family life, the tender fragility of childhood and marriage, and the beautifully haunting representations of nature.



Post Tenebras Lux will be released on DVD and Blu Ray in UK&Ireland on 22 July starring Adolfo Jiménez Castro.

West Of Memphis DVD Review

West of Memphis is the 4th documentary on the subject of the West Memphis 3. It’s the first that is not part of the Paradise Lost series. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh funded it though their WingNut film company. It’s sort of a condensed version of the Paradise Lost series which is good thing cause those are all feature length so it’s quite epic in scope.

In case you have been living under a rock; the West Memphis 3 were 3 teenage boys who wrongly accused of “satanic murder” of three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993. There was very little evidence to point the blame to these boys however they were convicted of the crimes. They also were screwed after Jessie Misskelley (one of the 3 convicted boys) was tricked into doing a false confession due to his borderline mental retardation. They eventually spent over 18 years in federal prison. They were basically convicted because they were goth/metal kids that the locals didn’t like. It also was around the time of the satanic cult panic of the early 90s so it was easy to blame it on satanic cults. They eventually got out after pleading guilty but maintaining their innocence.

The film unlike the Paradise Lost goes into quite a bit to detail on the possible suspect Terry Hobbs. Terry was one of the victims’ stepfather and had a history of violence and is a very shady figure and has a very questionable alibi. Paradise Lost 2 is mostly about Mark Byers (one of the fathers of the murder kids) who for a long time was a the key suspect for WM3 supporters but eventually DNA ruled him out. It does however go though the entire case so people who haven’t seen Paradise Lost will get a good grasp of the case.

The documentary is slightly glossier than the Paradise Lost series probably due to Peter Jackson and Sony’s involvement with the film. This is not a bad thing cause it condenses the story to be easier digested for a casual viewer. It’s overall a extremely well made film about one of the worst miscarriages of justice in the recent memory.

The Murderer Lives at 21 (L'assassin habite... au 21) Blu-Ray Review

The Murderer Lives at 21 is the debut feature film by legendary French director Henri-Georges Clouzot. He would later make such masterpieces as The Wages of Fear and Les Diabloiques. He was the envy of Alfred Hitchcock who wished he made Les Diabloiques, so much so he commissioned the writers of the source novel to write Vertigo for him.

The basic story of The Murderer Lives at 21 is that murder/thief is stalking the streets of Paris. He leaves a calling card with “Monsieur Durand” at the scene of each crime. The inspector on the case gets a hot tip that he is living at the boarding house at 21 Avenue Junot. He decides to go under cover as a priest to trying to solve the crime and end this terror.

The film is a solid whodunit. It’s no masterpiece but for fans of Clouzot and French crime cinema of the 40s and 50s it’s a welcome re-release. It does however has a great sense of paranoia which certainly reflects the Nazi occupation of France. It does jump from a comedy to noir quite freely which doesn’t quite work but it’s a fascinating film that bridges the gap between French poetic realism and later film noir.

The film has been widely unavailable in Britain or the United States for a long time while most of Clouzot’s other work is widely available. It’s a breath of fresh air that the always reliable Masters of Cinema has released on both blu-ray and dvd with a strong transfer taken from Gaumont’s restoration and some supplementary features.

Anthony Asquith's Underground To Get BFI Release This June

Anthony Asquith's Underground (1928), a subterranean tale of love, jealousy, treachery and murder, evokes the daily life of the average Londoner better than any other film in Britain's silent canon. Restored by the BFI National Archive and following an acclaimed theatrical release in January, the BFI now brings the film to DVD and Blu-ray for the first time on 17 June 2013 in a Dual Format Edition. It is presented with a new orchestral score composed by Neil Brand and performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra; along with five short complementary films and an alternative score by musician/sound recordist Chris Watson

In the late 1920s Asquith, along with Hitchcock, was one of the most audacious young talents in British film and Underground was his own original screenplay. With its scenes of the bustling tube (passenger behaviour is strikingly familiar) and the capital’s parks, double-decker buses, pubs and shabby bedsits, Asquith masterfully balances the light and dark sides of city life, aided by a superb cast of Brian Aherne and Elissa Landi as the nice young lovers and Norah Baring and Cyril McLaglen as their unhappy counterparts

At just 26, Asquith's direction is assured, efficient and spare with some remarkably cinematic flourishes, clearly inspired by contemporary German and Russian filmmaking. It climaxes with a thrilling chase scene across the rooftops of the Lots Road Power Station.

For many years the restoration of Underground presented insurmountable difficulties, but developments in digital technology have enabled the BFI to make a significant improvement to the surviving film elements.

My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies to get a 25th anniversary cinema release

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the release of Studio Ghibli’s acclaimed masterpieces GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES and MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO, STUDIOCANAL are delighted to announce a nationwide theatrical release with a chance to experience a recreation of the original Japanese double-bill feature that first launched these anime classics. Pre-Production Begins on Michigan Film, Papou

Mother and Midwife Pictures is currently underway with pre-production on its feature length film, Papou. Starring international screen actor Yorgo Voyagis (Zorba the Greek) and Evan Kole (The Avengers), this unique tale of an imaginative young boy and his sickly grandfather has been the recipient of over $51,000 on a Kickstarter fundraiser, almost $55,000 in potential Michigan Film and Digital Media Incentive rebates, and numerous press acknowledgments.

The film is being produced by film industry veterans Michael Sinanis and Christos Moisides and directed by 24-year-old first time feature film director Michael Angelo Zervos. Zervos, who penned the story himself, states that his "intention is to create a film that does more than entertain for a day. The importance of the ability to captivate an audience doesn't end when the film ends. The film must create conversation that lasts into the future. It must engage on an emotional and intellectual level."

The film's large cast of local, national, and international talent took several months to gather. Zervos states that he went through hundreds of children for the lead role alone, finally settling on him after being impressed with his ability to think quickly on his feet and energetic vibrancy. "Working with children can be challenging," Zervos admits, "but the challenges are offset by the great reward on screen. Children can have a natural innocence that is magnetic to an audience and I think Evan is rife with this power."

As promotion for the film, the production company has hosted a Facebook application on its fan page called "Your Papou Story". This application features dozens of real life memories and stories about grandfathers submitted from around the world by fans of the film. The story with the most "likes" on Facebook by the month of June will receive movie related prizes.

V/H/S 2 Is A Sea Of Blood In New Red-Band Trailer

They may not be the most popular type of films critically but amongst genre fans especially horror fans, anthology films. Now the best of the bunch V/H/S surprised many with its consistency and now a full red band trailer for the S-VHS now called V/H/S 2 has been released  looks like will exceed all expectations.

I just recently watched the first film I was impressed and if you where , V/H.S 2 looks like it ill deliver the goods once more. Plenty of blood, guts, gore and mayhem. It looks like they will follow the same concept unsuspecting people this time private investigators searching for missing student and they come across a set of VHS tapes. When they switch the tapes on what they find is an number of horrific footage which suggests the missing student might be involved in something a lot more darker and disturbing.

Whilst the trailer doesn't reveal much on the plotlines or individual stories what we get is what we can expect in scares, explosions and unexpected frights.the directors scaring us this time are Simon Barrett (V/H/S), Adam Wingard (You’re Next), Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), Gareth Evans (The Raid), Timo Tjahjanto (The ABCs of Death), Gregg Hale and Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project).




No word on a UK release date but don't be surprise if V/H/S 2 will make it's UK premier at Edinburgh Film Festival next month if not Film4 London Frightfest in August. American horrorphiles can catch the film on 6th June on VOD or 12th July at a cinema near you.

Silent Film Great F.W. Murnau's TABU The Latest Edition To Masters Of Cinema

Tabu: A Story of The South Seas , considered one of the greatest films of the silent era, will be released as part of Eureka Entertainment’s MASTERS OF CINEMA series on Blu-ray and DVD on 17 June 2013.

Eureka Entertainment have announced that they will be releasing Tabu: A Story of The South Seas, the final film by one of the greatest of all filmmakers, F. W. Murnau (Nosferatu, Sunrise). In an updated edition of one of the great classics in the Masters of Cinema series, the film will be appearing for the first time ever in its proper 1.19:1 original aspect ratio on both the Blu-ray and DVD, and in an HD 1080p transfer on the Blu-ray. BFI To Release Weird Adventures On DVD In June

The last feature made by the distinguished duo of Powell and Pressburger is one of three films featured on a new volume of Children's Film Foundation tales, Weird Adventures, released on DVD by the BFI on 17 June 2013.

This latest collection brings together Alberto Cavalcanti’s The Monster of Highgate Ponds (1961), Powell and Pressburger’s The Boy Who Turned Yellow (1972) and A Hitch in Time (Jan Darnley-Smith, 1978) which stars Patrick Troughton.

In The Monster of Highgate Ponds young David promises to guard a mysterious egg which his uncle brings back from Malaysia. But, when a baby monster hatches, mayhem ensues as David struggles to keep the unruly, but friendly, creature from falling into the clutches of two ruthless crooks. This enchanting tale, shot on location on Hampstead Heath, features brilliant animated sequences by the legendary Halas & Batchelor, who also produced the film, and was directed by the celebrated Ealing director Alberto Cavalcanti (Went the Day Well?).

The Boy Who Turned Yellow is the splendidly eccentric final collaboration from eminent filmmaking duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes). London schoolboy John Saunders turns bright yellow after losing his pet mouse on a school trip. Is the mysterious colour change the result of an alien invasion or does the answer lie closer to home?

In A Hitch in Time, Patrick Troughton (Doctor Who) plays time-hopping inventor Professor Adam Wagstaff. Discovered working on his time machine by two curious kids, Wagstaff decides to send them back through the ages. But, with malfunctions a-plenty, will they be able to make it back? Featuring Jeff Rawle (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) as 'Sniffy' Kemp, the teacher out to spoil everybody's fun, A Hitch in Time is a riotous retelling of history.

For over 30 years the Children's Film Foundation produced quality entertainment for young audiences, employing the cream of British filmmaking talent. Newly transferred from the best available elements held in the BFI National Archive, these much-loved and fondly remembered films finally return to the screen after many years out of distribution in specially curated DVD releases from the BFI. The fourth volume of CFF films, Bumps in the Night, will be released in October 2013.

Eureka Entertainment acquire Sundance-winner Computer Chess

The groundbreaking, Alfred P. Directly following Bujalski’s newest and long-anticipated film’s Sundance premiere, Computer Chess was given the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Award, which honours a film based around the theme of science and/or technology. The film went on to have its International Premiere at the latest Berlin Film Festival, and will be presented as part of the distinguished BAMcinémafest this June in Brooklyn for its New York premiere, before moving on to a major UK festival debut in anticipation of a UK theatrical run coordinated by Eureka! Entertainment in late autumn, and an early-2014 Blu-ray and DVD release as part of the highly esteemed and awarded-winning Masters of Cinema Series.

A boldly intelligent ensemble comedy with a feel and atmosphere that surpass easy comparison, Computer Chess takes place in the early-1980s over the course of a weekend conference where a group of obsessive software programmers have convened to pit their latest refinements in machine-chess and the still-developing field of artificial intelligence (AI) against an assembly of human chess masters. The Masters of Cinema Series producer Craig Keller and Eureka! Entertainment’s Managing Director Ron Benson negotiated the deal for the film with Andrew Herwitz, head of The Film Sales Company on behalf of the producers.

Computer Chess stars Patrick Riester, Myles Paige, James Curry, Robin Schwartz, Gerald Peary, and Wiley Wiggins. The film was produced by Houston King and Alex Lipschultz, and was directed by Andrew Bujalski.

Jeff Nichols' Mud Review

Jeff Nichols' Mud successfully presents a tale of broken romances and coming of age in a woozy Arkansas Summer, but falls victim to lashings of melodramatic clichés and an overstretched runtime.

The Take Shelter director's latest feature follows two teenage boys Elis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) who encounter Mud (Matthew McCougnahey), a fugitive who hopes to be reunited with his on-off girlfriend, Juniper (Reece Witherspoon).

Nichols' well-crafted sense of Americana and childhood nostalgia immediately suggest parallels to tales like Rob Reiner's Stand By Me - however, Mud feels slightly more contrived and dependent on manipulative melodramatic techniques than Reiner's film. Nichols' narrative is filled with Southern charm and sharply realistic characters, with the director capturing childhood hope and innocence in troubled surroundings. This core essence of Mud is relatively simple, but Nichols' screenplay has a tendency to dwell on elements that do not feel entirely relevant or pressing such as Neckbone's home life or the workings of Elis' parents relationship - resulting in the somewhat intimidating 135 minute run time. Nichols does provide a well-staged and dramatic conclusion to his Southern tale, however, this ultimately appears thirty minutes too late subsequently lessening its impact.

Cinematographer Adam Stone shoots Mud with a hazy gaze - capturing a modern America filled with Walmarts and fast-food places. This provides a modern  glance at youthful innocence in contemporary South - serving as somewhat of a 21st Century re-envisioning of the work of Mark Twain.  Stone has the ability to capture the sun-soaked beauty in anything from a grocery store parking  lot to Mud's island hideaway.  This sense of nostalgia and Americana is heightened by an impeccable soundtrack featuring the likes of The Beach Boy's Help Me Rhonda.

The real driving force behind Mud is the performances by the film's two young leads, Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland - both of which feel utterly genuine. Sheridan in particular pours such natural heart and soul into the role of Elis that it would be a challenge not to be impressed.

McCoughnahey also excels as the smart, chip-toothed  titular character who enchants Elis and Neckbone. However, McCougnahey's performance really reaches its peak in Mud's conclusion when the boys realise Mud's life is not exactly perfect. It would have been nice had Reece Witherspoon been given slightly more to do than play the two-dimensional loose-lipped Southern girl.   Cult favourites Joe Don Baker and Sam Shepard also leave a lasting impact with two smaller roles, alongside magnificent American Horror Story star, Sarah Paulson.

Mud serves as a hazy slice of Americana - ably capturing a changing world seen through the lens of youthful innocence. The impact of the stellar performances and cinematography, however,  is weakened by a over-stretched runtime and melodramatic clichés.

BBC Films' West Is West to premiere on BBC Two on Saturday 18th May

BBC Two will premiere West Is West, the sequel to internationally acclaimed and multi-award winning film East is East, on Saturday 18th May at 22:15.

West is Westis a coming of age story about confronting ones true desires and fears, no matter the age.

Thirteen year old Sajid (Aqib Khan) is struggling to meet his Pakistani father’s traditions in his home of Manchester, England. When Sajid finds himself in some trouble after ditching school his father George (Om Puri) decides to send him to Pakistan for a month to live with his first wife, whom he abandoned 30 years ago, to learn discipline and to grow-up. Upon arrival, Sajid finds that his father is not as highly regarded as he may have thought, and that Pakistan is not as idyllic as it was made to seem. George arrives at the end of the month to collect Sajid but is faced with his own self-image issue and realises that he himself has much to learn as well.

Directed by Andy De Emmony, West Is West stars Om Puri alongside Aqib Khan, Linda Bassett, Lesley Nicol, Ila Arun and Jimi Mistry.

 A'World class slasher movie'  It's A Beautiful Day (Kuso Subarashii Kono Sekai) asks the question, is it really a beautiful day for all in this movie, watch the trailer!

Directed by Asakuro Kayoko It's A Beautiful Day apparently filmed in Los Angeles stars Korean actress Kim Khobbi (Breathess)as Ah-Joong a student who finds herself mixed up in a horrific incident. She gets invited by some Japanese students to a camp area just outside the city and despite the fact she's struggling with the language barrier she becomes even more alienated  when the others are more interested in sex, drugs and alcohol. Things go down hill even more when a group of malicious siblings decide to target the camp Ah-Joong and the students are living.

It's A Beautiful Day is set for a 8th June 2013 Japanese release, film stars Akihiro Kitamuro (Human Centipede), Nanako Ohata and Shijimi.

Synopsis

Korean international student A-Joong (Kim Kkobbi) takes part in a camp at a country village, located in the suburbs of Los Angeles. A-Joong isn't happy with the Japanese international students who seem to be addicted to alcohol, drugs or sex. At that time, some brothers, who make a living through murders and burglary, target the cottage where the international students stay.

Watch UK trailer For Indie Horror Static

Milo Ventimiglia and Sara Paxton star in the critically acclaimed creepy horror Static which makes its debut on DVD thanks to Second Sight Films.

A young writer (Ventimiglia – Heroes, Rocky Balboa) and his wife (Sarah Shahi – Life) are struggling with the loss of their child but just as they are trying to get their lives back on track a hysterical young woman (Paxton – The Innkeepers, Last House on the Left), turns up at their secluded house in the middle of the night, claiming she is being chased by mysterious masked men. Letting her stay the night the couple are soon drawn into the horror when the unknown force starts to stalk them, a terrifying game of cat and mouse ensues, resulting in a shocking conclusion and one of the most chilling film finales of recent years.

Static is written and directed by Todd Levin a music director making his feature film debut and will be premiering in the UK on DVD on 15 July 2013. No word on USA date however Cinedigm are confirmed they have the North American rights to the film, so an announcement on the date will be soon.  Clowns you sometimes wonder why people are terrified of them maybe Joe Ballarini has the answer in his short Buckle. Whilst waiting for his next studio project the Dance Of The Dead writer decided to keep his mind occupied by creating this horror short starring Signal star Justin Welborn. It's birthday time and Buckles has turned up to spread some birthday but as you'll see they get more than they bargained.

Terracotta Far East Film Festival Lauch 2013 Programme

Tickets are now on sale for the fifth edition of the annual Terracotta Far East Film Festival.
Over the years the festival has seen the event go from strength to strength. This year is set to be the biggest yet, expanding to 27 films spread over 4 sections and 2 venues from 06 - 15 June 2013.

The core of the festival will remain a hand-picked selection of the best CURRENT ASIAN CINEMA at The Prince Charles Cinema. This all UK Premiere section reflects the vibrancy and energy in Asian filmmaking today. Ranging from realist dramas to romance, light comedies to spy action thrillers, swordfighting epics to gothic fairytales, the festival aims to balance the representation of Asian countries.

Terracotta Festival 2013 (TFEFF13) will open with Hong Kong action COLD WAR on Thursday 06 June 2013.

This year’s edition will also see a return to last year’s Terror Cotta Horror night on Friday 07 June in association with Film 4 Frightfest. The triple bill has now extended to an all-night horror marathon.

The organisers also have added the “IN MEMORY OF” section to mark the tenth anniversary of two of Hong Kong’s best loved and most missed stars: Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui.

Terracotta Festival 2013 will close out at the ICA with “SPOTLIGHT ON: Indonesia”. 11 - 15 June will be an entire week dedicated to Indonesian cinema, from the country's freshest emerging talent alongside work by established filmmakers. This new section will bring rare insight into one of Asia’s rising film powerhouses.

Guest actors and directors will be attending the festival to introduce their films, host Q&A sessions and run Masterclasses on various aspects of what it means to be a filmmaker today. Filmmakers in attendance will be announced closer to the festival dates.

Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England will be the first ever film to be released in UK nationwide cinemas, on free TV, on DVD and on Video-on-Demand on the same day – with Film4, Picturehouse Entertainment, 4DVD and Film4 Channel partnering for nationwide multi-platform distribution on Friday 5th July. The film is one of the first to receive funding from the BFI Distribution Fund New Models strand, which supports experimental and ambitious release models.

The unique release will give audiences and fans of Wheatley’s previous films (Down Terrace, Kill List, Sightseers) the choice of how and where to experience his new film – a brilliant psychedelic trip into magic and madness – whether it’s amidst an audience in the cinema, followed by a satellite Q&A with Ben and the cast; delving into multiple extras on a special edition DVD; from the comfort of the sofa showcased with a director’s intro and interview on TV; or the freedom to watch when they want on VoD. A Field in England is the first feature to be developed and fully financed through Film4’s innovation hub Film4.0, and was conceived as a film which would be funded, shot, edited and distributed in an agile and ambitious way. A digital masterclass designed to immerse audiences in the making of the film will also launch around release, developed by Film4.0 in partnership with the filmmakers. Through behind-the-scenes interviews, on-set videos, and unseen rushes, Ben Wheatley, cast and key crew will take the audience on a unique journey through the creative choices that determined the final cut.

Ben Wheatley says: "It's great to team up with Film4 to make this film and to work with new partners such as Picturehouse and 4DVD. We have tried to innovate with this film, in production and distribution. I'm very proud of the results and look forward to sharing the film with the audience."
