VIVA RIVA! is a prime example of the much improving mainstream cinema from Africa and its turned a few heads as well around the international film festival circuit. The movie has sweeped theboards in the recent African Film Awards picking up the best movie and director and the movie maid its UK Premiere at Glasgow Film Festival in February however 27 May Metrodome will be releasing the movie in UK & Ireland, unsure if it will be cinematic or direct to DVD.
Here's what Glasgow Film Festival said about the movie:
An Explosive feature debut from writer-director Djo Tunda Wa Munga, VIVA RIVA! has put Congolese filmmaking on the map.Winning comparisons with macho movies of Tony Scott and the knife-edge tension of a classic like The Wages of Fear, Viva Riva! is set in Kinshasa where life is cheap and petrol is more precious than gold.Riva (Patsha Bay) is a hustler with his eye on a lucrative stash of gas. His eye is also on the knockout Nora (Manie Malone), mistress of crime boss Azor (Diplome Amekindra). What follows is an unpretentious, briskly edited frenzy of double dealing action, sweaty sex and outrageous, genre film making. Quentin Tarantino has to take shine of this.
