When you talk about been an inspiration not just in the east but also in the west there is one person you can think right away its Osamu Tezuka, the father of Japanese Manga and Anime. Tezuka-san is the man who introduced to the world Astroboy, Black Jack, Kimba The Lion (which is seen as the inspiration for the Lion King) he loved Walt Disney as they loved him and everything he has created on paper has easily translated to the big screen and this latest manga there is high hopes for that too.
Buddha is Tezuka's award winning manga (Eisner Comic Award winner 2004,2005) and has been adapted to animation composing of three parts. The movie is called BUDDHA: THE GREAT DEPARTURE which takes in the first 2 volumes (of 8) of the manga loosely based on the life story of Gautama Buddha the founder of Buddhism.
