Studio Canal / Magnolia Pictures have sent us the trailer for MAGIC TRIP, the new film from Oscar winning documentary maker Alex Gibney (Taxi To The Dark Side, Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Hunter S Thompson, Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room). The film recently screened at the London Film Festival and was also in the official selection of this year’s Sundance festival.
The film documents the Ken Kessey's 1964 odyssey across America which was one hell of along LSD fuelled trip across the States , he was joined on the trip by Neal Cassady who would become Jack Kerouac's inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty (to be played by Garrett Hedlund in 2012 film) for On The Road. You may ask who Ken Kessey was the writer for book based on the Jack Nicholson's cult classic One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and on Magic Trip Gibney has got permission to delve into the archive footage of Kesey and his merry band of pranksters. Every one who was hip and down with the kids 1960's groovy generation are involved in this film (mostly archive footage too), Alan Ginsberg, Jerry Garcia, The Greatful Dead, Jack Kerouac with Stanley Tucci guiding us on this acid trip down memory lane as the narrator.
Magic Trip is getting a limited release in the cinema on November 18th then going on released via DVD & Blu Ray from November 28th. Also today the good folks at Empire have released the film poster online too, and you'll find that under the trailer!
In 1964, Ken Kesey, the famed author of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” set off on a legendary, LSD-fuelled cross-country road trip to the New York World’s Fair. He was joined by “The Merry Band of Pranksters,” a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac’s “On the Road,” and the driver and painter of the psychedelic Magic Bus. Kesey and the Pranksters intended to make a documentary about their trip, shooting footage on 16MM, but the film was never finished and the footage has remained virtually unseen. With MAGIC TRIP, Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood were given unprecedented access to this raw footage by the Kesey family. They worked to restore over 100 hours of film and audiotape, and have shaped an invaluable document of this extraordinary piece of American history.
