Mike Mills past career as leading graphic designer and music video producer is apparent from the rich imagery, quirky drawings and irreverent designs that are woven beautifully throughout the film.
With its dreamy soundtrack of original tracks and classic Jazz from artists such as Hoagy Carmichael and Jelly Roll Morton – Beginners is an enjoyable, sweet, tender film that deals effortlessly with the universal themes of love, family and loss. Remind yourself how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments when it arrives on Blu-ray™ and DVD from 14th November 2011.
Beginners imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent) only months after his father Hal (Academy® Award nominee** Christopher Plummer) has passed away. Throughout the film Oliver shares his woes with Arthur, the Jack Russell terrier he inherited from his dad with the dog’s contributions to their “dialogue” appearing as subtitles.
The new love Oliver finds with Anna floods him with memories of his father who, following 44 years of marriage, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal’s new honesty brought father and son closer than they ever had been and ever imagined possible. Now Oliver endeavours to love Anna with all the bravery, humour, and hope that his father taught him.
