Love sees no colour, love sees no sexuality but sometimes love comes in strange ways, a supernatural love like in Joachim Trier's 'Thelma'. After making his English language debut Louder Than Bombs, the Norwegian auteur is moving away from emotionally charged grounded dramas for a genre piece. A love story, superpowers and ahead of its premiere we have the American Trailer, check it out...
The movie takes us to Oslo, where a young female student (Eili Harboe) attends University and slowly falls in love with a beautiful classmate, As their love grows she starts to notice she is gaining powerful yet terrifying powers.
It's a new direction for the director, an intriguing one at that. The movie does seem to have those tropes we expect from the director, delivering something a little more upbeat, but we do feel there will be twists, something nightmarish waiting around the corner for Thelma. Nothing is straightforward when your human and Joachim Trier is one of those directors who can capture that feeling exquisitely.
'Thelma' is set for an October Norwegian release date, with a certain Cannes Film Festival knocking on the door and this trailer set up for an English speaking audience. I wouldn't be surprised this will be on the programme, if not Venice or Toronto. Like his previous movies, this will get a UK cinema release possibly end of 2017, early 2018 with a London Film Festival slot in October.
Thelma also stars Okay Kaya, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, and Henrik Rafaelsen.
