Baby Hit Me One More Time - Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers To Get August Home Release

Prepare to have your senses well and truly assaulted by the coolest film of the year and uncover a tale of deranged, crazed, sexy college teens on the road to hedonism and self discovery.  Spring Breakers is released on 2 Disc Special Edition Blu-ray and DVD with Ultraviolet on 12 August 2013, and becomes available for Digital Download from 29 July 2013 from Universal Pictures (UK).  The Special Edition Blu-ray will contain an additional bonus DVD disc loaded with fantastic special features including deleted scenes, outtakes and an exclusive ‘making of’ documentary.

Starring Disney graduates Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place) and Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Rachel Korine (Mister Lonely), Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars) and Oscar^® nominee James Franco (127 Hours) as you’ve never seen them before in a take on the American college tradition of Spring Break that has to be seen to be believed. Brit, Candy, Cotty and Faith have been best friends since grade school, trying to save enough money for Spring Break. Still short of cash, three of them hold up a restaurant using toy guns in order to get to Florida for two weeks of fun.  After a few days of partying, the girls get arrested during a police raid and land up in jail.  Bailed out by local drug dealer Alien (Franco), they soon find themselves in over their heads when their mentor introduces them to the wonders of an addictively dangerous Spring Breakthey will never forget.

If you follow The People's Movies and cinehouse you'll know opinion was divided. Here at The People's Movies it's rated one of the worst films in 2013 (0.5/5 rating) however over at Cinehouse 4 star review it was a more enjoyable experience. Whatever your views on the film Spring breakers is one of those films which will become a cult classic for the right or wrong reasons making the purchase of the film even more worthwhile.

Thoughts on Spring Breakers

Harmony Korine has finally made his pop movie and it might just be the most definitive piece of art made about this sweaty, writhing, ritualistic mass of American grotesquery known as spring break.

What goes on at places like St. Pete Beach is a truly surreal subcultural phenomenon ripe for documenting, and Korine does this sun-kissed Sodom and Gomorrah justice by not only surveying its obvious seductive hedonism, but also the complex moral implications of those who willingly participate. His four female leads act almost as Dantean test subjects, descending further into the dark heart of spring break until only those who prove amorally pure can subsume the true mantle of “Spring Breaker”.

Korine frames this the only way he knows how, through a heightened form of reality whose guiding mantra dictates: “Just pretend it’s like a videogame; like it’s a movie”. In what may be his only transparently drawn social critique, he flattens the moral landscape in accordance to its perceived value. The iconography of Scarface and flashy boardwalk arcades bleeds through the hyper-saturated neon, and in true videogame fashion there is a final boss and an orgiastic gun-battle finale, which takes place at a Tony Montana-styled criminal fortress.

But are the Breakers who emerge from the bloodbath victorious to be celebrated or reviled? This is where Korine shows surprising amounts of restraint, unwilling to deem the gat-toting avenging angels as either fallen souls or empowered saints outright. The real answer is somewhere between the two. The Breakers’ telephoned check-ins with mum and dad in the closing scenes are hilariously deceptive; a possible indication of their ultimate disillusionment from reality. But they also read like the calming assurances of girls who have made peace with the monster within. The girls who manage to shoot their way to the finish line do so out of free will and determination, and considering the materialistic and nihilistic lifestyle they fought to defend, that’s as scary as it is admirable.



It’s a stroke of genius not to have all the girls be four parts of the same whole; an agency-robbing hive mind. Selena Gomez’s Faith quickly finds that what was initially sold to her as a spiritual quest has indeed led to spiritual destitution, where rooms are rife with skeezy guys asserting their male gaze in uncomfortable, genuinely threatening ways. That pool hall scene simmers with enough racial/sexual subtext to fuel its own movie (we’ll leave it to Larry Clark to tackle that one). Her hasty departure from the group subsequently feels completely justified—that point is probably where most sane people would yell “Stop the ride. I want to get off.” Unfortunately for her, spring break isn’t for sane people—and that’s where Korine’s fascination begins.

Korine’s ambiguity, or rather his non-committal stance towards moralising, allows the film to toe a tricky line between relish and repulsion: the adrenaline rush of a crime spree or an occasional drunken hotel fuckfest isn’t denied. Yet there’s no escaping the self-destructive pall that hangs over the mounting excess.

“Look at all my shit,” I imagine the film saying to us. “Redistribution of phallic symbolism y’all. Undressing the hedonist fantasy up on screen, y’all. Pretty lights in every colour, y’all.” This collective dream of the MTV generation, powered by sexual and societal liberation, which adheres to its own warped logic and holds its cherished cultural signifiers dear, is an endlessly fascinating, quintessentially American concoction. Essentially a designated window for primal transgressions that somehow snuck up the ranks to become a legitimate rite-of-passage, spring break is loud and obnoxious and bizarre and singular and I can’t look away.

If there's one perfect way to lose your squeaky Clean Disney image star in Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers will do the trick. Skimpy, sexualised, drug fuelled, all out batshit crazy, Don't knock the hustle and watch Spring Breakers UK Trailer.

Spring Breakers  stars Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine 4 college girl friends  who'll do anything to extended their Spring Break. After been arrested the girls get their wish when they encounter  Alien (James Franco)a local drug dealer who bails them out of trouble. The new trailer does provide some new snippets as do the 2 TV Spots and featurettes giving us a  a good sense of the debauchery that curtails in the film along with an interesting look at the making of it too.

Spring Breakers is a coming of age story for its one time Disney stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens even Ashley Benson from her Nickelodeon days. These girls are certainly grown up now they want to party if you love those programmes that follow holiday reps in clubbing hotspots around Mediterranean tenfold that throw in some guns , James Franco been gangsta you'll have an idea what you can expect when this one arrives. Spring Breakers is certainly going to keep cinephiles talking, some walking out of screens, others loving the controversial film when  last week the film made it's UK premier at Glasgow Film Festival. If you where eagled eyed following my Tweets when I shared my after thoughts and all I say is I described the film as 'Like been locked in a room forced to watch Jack & Jill on a 24 hour loop....painful'. In the film's defence the demographic of the film the visual feel the score will go down a treat.

Time To Party With Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers

It always happens one day, the prospect of Indie film maker Harmony Korine making something remotely mainstream rather than lo-fi wholesomeness was just a matter of time before it would happen and Spring Breakers is that film and these are the trailers!

Even someone like Korrine moving upwards is logical move and a film which seems we've been hearing about for a very long time it's good now to actually see some footage. Spring Breakers stars  Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine a group of girls long time friends, all students in need of some adventure all head off for some funtime on a spring break. As the attempt keep the fun going they encounter Alien (James Franco) who bails the girls out of trouble grooming them to rob a restaurant.

I haven't seen Trash Humpers but I've seen enough to know Spring Breakers Korine seems to have kept his oddness, off Kilter as well deliver the stereotypical idiocy  of the target demographic, young adults. What will raise a few eyebrows is the attempt of former Disney Channel stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens in their attempts to loose that Squeaky clean Disney image, as you'll see they are naughty naughty girls! With a cool Drive style score from Cliff Martinez, Skrillex  Spring Breakers looks like unbridled fun caper that will rile up a few people and live up to it's recent buzz.
