If Tim Burton met Edgar Allan Poe down a dark alley and decide to create a animation THE ROMANTIC would be there outcome. The movie is directed (and written) by Michael Heneghan and if you happening to be in Boston today or on Tuesday you can check out the world premier of this at the Boston Underground Film Festival.
 Read the Synopsis and check out the trailer below;
The curious citizens that inhabit the wondrous land of Vauxhull believe the universe to be governed by four gods. There’s Po, the flirtatious and free spirited Goddess of Love; Pik, the macabre Lord of Hate; and Pjorrc, the God of Time, who diabolically plots over the earth from his clockwork fortress on the moon.

Lastly, there is Obble-Dee-Puh Puh, the God of All Gods and Creator of All Things. The shrouded king who sits comfortably upon a throne of ascendancy, controlling the destinies of all living things. Men live their lives whilst the gods provide them with the means to make them extraordinary. And there is balance.

But within this mythological world of autumn landscapes and peculiar creatures, a heartbroken young Romantic swears a vicious oath to free the human race from the omnipotent control of the otherworldly gods. Blaming the divine forces for the loss of a past love, Romance embarks on a vengeful showdown with the Holy Host. Along the way he befriends Patience, a crackpot alcoholic who fulfills the role of mentor to Romance’s hero. Together the two traverse the lands, romancing women and hunting the divine.

But the Gods have their own agendas, and some are more willing to part with their lives than others. As the romance enfolds, a macramé of horri c causality materializes, tying the major players together in a net of family relationships and betrayal. Elsewhere, a monstrous religious zealot by the name of Fat Daddy manipulates the human race into following his royal son and their conservative manifesto entitled The Poetic End. As Romance and Patience’s journey continues, it becomes more and more evident that the world is changing and there are forces both human and divine that will stop at nothing to determine the shape that this new world will embrace.

If you are like myself very dissappointed on the recent Tim Burton version of Alice In Wonderland maybe this will cheer you up, well for the adults. Wyatt Denny has created a independent short where The Mad Hatter and co have been replaced sex,drugs and Russian Roulette in Alice & The White Hair.
Alice is now a callgirl and walkouts of clubs with guys who look like something out of a marylin manson video, The tea party is now a crazy game of Russian Roulette!!! This is an stylish, contemporary modern twist to the classic Lewis Carroll story, come to think of it the original was a bit of a strange affair as well!!!
Visually this is good stuff plenty of eye candy plus full of up to date effects which dont overstate the movie but just blend in nicely. This movie is 15 minutes long and does suit the style of this adaptation, so enjoy!!!

Australian Cinema has always had a decent reception in UK over the past decade or two. If you switch on UK television you'll find 1 in 3 soaps are Australian and more recently on Scottish television we've had Underbelly a violentish crime drama. But when it comes to America it's not as great though that could change with THE SQUARE.
The Square is an stylish crime drama about Raymond a man tangled up in a love affair with Carla, a beautiful but troubled woman. She tests Raymond's moral limits when she brings him the cash earnings from her husbands latest crime dealings. They have once chance to go it alone, take the money and run...
The movie has been directed by stunt man Nash Edgerton, brother of Joel who is in the soon to be released awesome Animal Kingdom as well playing the Kurt Russell role in THE THING prequel.
This movie played at last years London Australian Film festival but there's been no theatrical release (or maybe we blinked and missed it), but American movie fans can see the movie on a limited release on April 9th with a possibly full release in May. Canadian movie fans will see a theatrical release on April 16th.
