REVIEW: Grzegorz Cisiecki's Short Film 'SMOKE'
Smoke (Dym) (2007)
Smoke is a conceptually ambitious 2007 short from Polish director Grzegorz Cisiecki, who bills it as “The story of the person who became the captive of surrealistic madness”. The influence of Lynch and Kubrick drips heavily through every scene as he plays with enigmatic elements -- a woman in red, elegant decors, mysteriously masked men -- in a dreamlike manner. Despite the Polish location/cast the film unfolds in a wordless manner, relying on images to drive the somewhat elusive plot. Especially of note is the sumptuous 35mm film photography by Dawid Rymar, visible dirt-marks and all. Watch the full thing below, but prepare for some heavy symbolism:
