Film 4 Frightfest Invite You To Their Annual FrightFest Halloween All Nighter

The FrightFest All-Nighter 14 returns to its spiritual home, The Prince Charles Cinema, on Saturday October 25, with five killer titles, including the world premiere of Anthony DiBlasi’s LAST SHIFT.

We kick off with a special preview of The Vicious Brothers EXTRATERRESTRIAL, a fine blend of ‘Close Encounters’ and ‘Communion’ with some of the most extraordinary special effects and camerawork you’ll see in 2015. Next up, THE ABCs OF DEATH 2, needs no introduction. The first was a huge draw at FrightFest Glasgow and now we can scream along to 26 more deaths by 26 handpicked filmmakers. This is followed by the world premiere of Anthony DiBlasi’s demonic horror LAST SHIFT, which had to be dropped from the August line-up because of altered release and completion dates as did our next attraction - the highly anticipated sequel THE PACT II, which has its UK premiere. And Giallo fans will not want to miss our last presentation - the ‘Airplane’ of the Italian thriller genre in the sublime Astron-6 homage THE EDITOR.

Simon Rumley Joins Shortcuts To Hell 2 Judging Panel

The annual Film 4 Frightfest in London will be upon us very soon which means it's nearly time for the annual Shortcuts To Hell short film competition. This year the contest has a new judge British film director  Simon Rumley, who has just completed post production on his first ‘Hollywood’ movie The Last Word, SHORTCUTS TO HELL 2, which is run by FrightFest, Horror Channel, Movie Mogul and Wildseed Studios.

Rumley commented: “'As an arena to experiment, innovate and, ultimately, learn a craft, short film making always will be the lifeblood of film-making. It's great, therefore, to have a competition such as this to give aspiring film-makers an added incentive to try to realise their goal. This is a unique and mind-blowing opportunity”'

He will join Rosie Fletcher, acting editor of Total Film, Horror Channel’s Emily Booth, FrightFest director, Paul McEvoy, Wildseed Studio’s Creative Director, Jesse Cleverly and Movie Mogul’s John Shackleton, who are looking for new filmmakers primed and ready to make their first horror feature film.

The panel will choose three finalists who will then go forward to this year’s FrightFest event at the Vue West End in London, and have their 3-minute films screened before the discerning FrightFest audience. The overall winner will be chosen by public vote and will have their film produced by Movie Mogul and Wildseed Studios, entering production early 2015, with a minimum cash production fund of £20,000. The completed feature film will receive UK digital distribution, its world premiere at FrightFest 2015, and a broadcast premiere on Horror Channel.

Cinehouse & The People's Movies have been sent the news that Film 4 FrightFest and 4Digital Media are to preview the UK premiere of Iron Sky: Dictator's Cut, ahead of its special collector's Steelbook Blu-Ray release on February 10th 2014.

The 'Dictator Cut' of Iron Sky features an additional twenty minutes of never seen before footage, will screen with Director Timo Vuorensola and Producer Tero Kaukomaa in attendance at a special one off event at the Prince Charles Cinema, Leicester Square on Saturday 1st Februay 2014 at 6.00 PM.

Having had a fairly hectic day at work, I was very much looking forward to attending the screening of You’re Next recently. Few things can loosen the brain up like a good old fashioned slasher movie and I was relishing the thought of ninety-six minutes of thrills and kills. Directed by Adam Wingard (VHS, A Horrible Way to Die) and set during a family reunion in a remote part of the countryside in the US, You’re Next sees the moneyed Davison family besieged by lunatic killers in creepy animal masks. Fortunately, it turns out that Erin, the girlfriend of one of the eldest brother is something of a total badass herself and is soon rallying the family around to fight back with makeshift weaponry and traps. Thus begins a small scale war with their attackers. Who will survive and what will be left of them?

Despite my initial excitement, I was actually fairly nonplussed by You’re Next at first. It seemed fairly stolid, with broadly drawn characters and an uninventive set up. If I had to pin point where my attitude towards it changed, it would probably be where at the height of a ludicrously petty argument around the dinner table (listen out for some of the exchanges here), one member of the extended Davison clan (played by horror director Ti West) is suddenly shot through the head by a crossbow bolt. At first, this goes unnoticed, heightening the ridiculousness of the situation, but before long the Davisons are shrieking and being punctured and the film retains this level of excitement throughout. I realised that what I was watching was in fact a comedy so black, it was bordering on farce.

Instead of the stodgy, unremarkable horror I thought I had been watching, You’re Next displayed genre smarts and a level of self-awareness that is all too lacking in most horror films. The film plays delightfully with the concept of Chekhov’s gun and leaves the audience on tenterhooks for much of its running time, embracing and ridiculing conventions equally. The cast, which includes cult heroes Joe Swanberg and Barbara Crampton, seemed to be having riotously good fun and played their roles with relish.

Much of the goodwill I have for the film should also be accredited to its heroine, as played by Sharni Vinson, previously best known for her work on gritty horrors Home and Away and Step Up 3D. Her portrayal of Erin as the plucky and likable though simultaneously borderline psychotic protagonist is measured and deft; by the time the film reaches its climax and Erin is striking iconic, axe-wielding final girl poses, the audience and I were pretty much cheering her every move and you got the feeling a potential cult-horror hero had been born. The deaths she deals are by turns imaginative, amusing and thoroughly gruesome.

It should also be said that whilst the film completely embraces its trashy fittings, the cinematography is a class above what you might typically expect (credit due to Andrew Palmero). Mads Heldtberg’s doomy and inventive music is also very commendable.

To nit-pick, you could argue that the film’s twist is utterly predictable and if you’re watching it without acknowledging the tongue it has placed in its cheek, you may find it a bit run of the mill. However, everyone loves a good home invasion movie (heck, even James Bond got in on the act in his last outing) and it would be very difficult to harbour any ill-will towards one as fun and shrewd as this one would be particularly rude. Seek it out and get ready to cheer on the kick-arse Vinson as she delivers sublimely violent justice.

You’re Next is released in the UK on August 30th.

Film 4 Frightfest 2013 Announce Opening And Closing Films

Big Bad Wolves from Israel and Indian Zombies signal global horror invasion at this year’s FrightFest. This year’s festival opens with the world premiere of The Ford Brothers THE DEAD 2: INDIA - the first-ever International production of a zombie film shot in India.

Howard and Jon Ford, the British director, writer and producer team behind the acclaimed African-set zombie road movie 'The Dead’ said today: “It's truly an honour to be the opening film – mind-blowing! Being at FrightFest for ‘The Dead’ was such an incredible experience for us and one of the highlights of our whole journey with the film. It's an awesome event with a brilliant crowd and we both sincerely cannot wait to see you all there!”.

The film follows the story of India-based American engineer Nicholas Burton (JOSEPH MILLSON) in a race against time to reach his pregnant girlfriend Ishani Sharma (MEENU). Burton enlists the help of an orphan street kid Javed (ANAND GOYAL) and together they make a perilous 300 mile journey across deadly landscapes as a zombie apocalypse threatens to engulf the entire nation.

Film4 FrightFest will close with the UK premiere of directors Aharon Keshales &Navot Papushado’s extraordinary revenge thriller BIG BAD WOLVES. Soaked in twisted tension, fairytale myth and seat-edged suspense, the film follows the lives of three men on a collision course: following a series of brutal murders: the father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a

vigilante police detective operating outside the law, and the main suspect in the killings - a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder.

Aharon and Navot said today: “We always dreamt of having a film which would be good enough to be shown at FrightFest, but not even in our wildest dreams did we think that an Hebrew speaking revenge thriller would get us there. FrightFest is really making history here. As a token of our appreciation we promise to give everyone there a night they won't easily forget”.

Horror Channel, FrightFest & Movie Mogul team up to launch nationwide search for new filmmakers

Can you make a short film that can cut it in hell? Have you got some killer ideas?

FrightFest and Movie Mogul, in association with Horror Channel, are challenging aspiring filmmakers to make a short horror film - the best six of which will be shown on Horror Channel and at the 2013 Film4 FrightFest event. The overall winner will receive a prize fund of £6,666 and the opportunity to develop a horror short or feature idea under mentorship from Movie Mogul, for a possible 2014 production.

666 Short Cuts To Hell is no ordinary film competition though. Entrants will have to follow a series of 'killer' restraints such as a maximum of 6 lines of dialogue, a maximum of 6 cast of and crew members and a maximum budget of £666.

Frightfest Announce UK Theatrical Tour For American Mary

Following its recent successful UK festival run, including the world’s first screening at Film4 FrightFest in London in August, the smart and stylish horror thriller American Mary will return to UK cinemas for a theatrical tour from January 11 2013, courtesy of FrightFest Presents.

Additionally, Canadian-born writer/directors Jen and Sylvia Soska, and Mary Mason herself, lead actress Katharine Isabelle (Gingers Snaps) will all be returning to the UK to introduce the screenings, starting at the Prince Charles Cinema on Friday January 11, followed by shows around the UK including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Brighton and Leeds.

The tour will take in seven cities over seven dates, with introductions and post-film Q&As from the filmmakers, compered by FrightFest’s Alan Jones and Paul McEvoy.

The FrightFest Halloween All-nighter returns to the Vue in London’s Leicester Square on Saturday October 27 for another helping of choice shock around the clock horror. And this year horror fans around the country can join in the fearful fun as, on Saturday November 3, the event travels to the Picturehouse Cambridge, the Empires in Sunderland and Newcastle and The Watershed Bristol.

Film 4 Frightfest The 13Th Line Up Is Here! Biggest Line Up In Festivals History!

Film4 FrightFest the 13th is delighted to unveil its most ambitious line-up in history. From the sensational SINISTER starring Ethan Hawke, the Sam Raimi produced THE POSSESSION and Jennifer Chambers Lynch’s jaw-dropping CHAINED, to the MANIAC remake, the surgical underground of AMERICAN MARY and the V/H/S anthology everyone is talking about, this year’s event is definitely something to scream about.

From Thurs 23 August to Monday 27 August the UK’s leading event for horror fantasy fans will be back at the Empire Cinema in London’s Leicester Square to present 48 films in three screens. Empire 1 will house the main event while the Discovery and the newly-created Re-Discovery strand will play in Empires 4 & 5.  There are eleven countries represented, with a record-beating fifteen world premieres and twenty-three UK or European premieres.

The Best of British horror fantasy gets its usual FF fanfare with our already announced opening film Paul Hyett’s THE SEASONING HOUSE and closer, James Nunn and Ronnie Thompson’s TOWER BLOCK. Also showcased are Peter Strickland’s extraordinary Italian horror deconstruction BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO, Jon Wright’s creature feature GRABBERS, the living dead romp COCKNEYS VS. ZOMBIES, the human experiment warning GUINEA PIGS, the killer clown comedy STITCHES, the cannibal serial killer chiller SAWNEY, the psycho cop thriller MAY I KILL U?, the gory allegory BEFORE DAWN, the fear of THE INSIDE and the frightening COMMUNITY.

This year the festival is giving a prominent focus to the past, present and future of the Italian genre scene with Federico Zampaglione’s much anticipated neo-giallo TULPA and the Manetti Bros PAURA 3D. Plus Total Film magazine’s guest Icon this year is the Italian Master of Horror himself, Dario Argento and there’s a screening of the documentary EUROCRIME!, which celebrates the ‘poliziotteschi movies that ruled Italian 70s cinema.

From Spain come two of the country’s brightest talents with their recent blockbuster hits: Paco Plaza’s [REC]3 GENESIS and Jaume Balaguero’s, stunning thriller SLEEP TIGHT. Also in the Spanish language is HIDDEN IN THE WOODS, a Chilean chiller Other International highlights include the Dutch KILL ZOMBIE!, the Japanese DEAD SUSHI and Germany’s ERRORS OF THE HUMAN BODY and WE ARE THE NIGHT.

Currently under the radar but bound to get people buzzing are Steven C Miller’s UNDER THE BED, Ryan Smith’s AFTER, The Butcher Brothers’ THE THOMPSONS, Peter Engert’s REMNANTS, Stig Svendsen’s ELEVATOR and Buddy Giovinazzo’s return to the genre A NIGHT OF NIGHTMARES.

Then there’s T2/THE ABYSS star Michael Biehn’s directorial debut THE VICTIM, the gore documentary NIGHTMARE FACTORY focusing on the work of make-up genius Greg Nicotero, the Nazi zombie romp OUTPOST II: BLACK SUN, the latest in the mutant smash series WRONG TURN 4 and the ever popular INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM SHOWCASE(line-up to be announced soon) and ANDY NYMAN’S QUIZ FROM HELL presented by Emily Booth and The Horror Channel. And showing for the first time in the UK will be the most-wanted retrospective of the decade, Clive Barker’s NIGHTBREED: THE CABAL CUT.

FILM4 FrightFest the 13th’s innovation this year is our third venue at the Empire, the Re-Discovery Screen. Here you can see fully restored versions of three classics from the House of Hammer, THE DEVIL RIDES OUT, RASPUTIN THE MAD MONK and THE MUMMY’S SHROUD. We also have a special presentation of the legendary masterpiece, THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. Following on the from THE DEAD success of last year, there will be a free re-showing of INBRED and recording director Alex Chandon’s live commentary for the Anchor Bay DVD release. Plus there’s a chance to see two hits from our Glasgow Film Festival event: The Manetti Bros. THE ARRIVAL OF WANG and Paul China’s CRAWL.

Film4 FrightFest The 13th announces opening and closing night films

Paul Hyett’s claustrophobic, psychological horror, THE SEASONING HOUSE is set to open this year’s Film4 FrightFest. Starring Sean Pertwee, Kevin Howarth and Rosie Day, this hard-hitting exploration of war-time sexploitation, set in a Balkan brothel, marks special-effects guru Hyett’s directorial debut. Hyett and the cast will be attending the premiere on Thurs August 23.

Film4 FrightFest will close with the world premiere of Lionsgate’s TOWER BLOCK. Directed by James Nunn and Ronnie Thompson, this is a stunning suspense shocker. Trapped on the top floor of their run down East End home, a disparate group of neighbours are being targeted by a mystery sniper. This taut gripper stars Sheridan Smith, Jack O’Connell and Russell Tovey.
