Watch This: Animated Short AZUREUS RISING

Well its been nearly 5 weeks since I posted something on the blog but here we go again and we kick off with a little cracker of a animated sci-fi short called AZUREUS RISING.

Yep you will see alot of cliches and similar stuff from other movies with Matrix looking like its biggest inspiration but this is not a dig at this movie. The movie world be it animated or real world the movie genres have been used so much so its no surprise you'll see cliches but its what you do with them and create them into something different is what makes movies great and the team behind Azureus have done that.

Whats good about this is that this short movie hasn't taken the gritty realism route many of the current crop of movies have taken. The movies main character is a freedom fighter but who he is fighting we dont really know but the whole thing just looks so good we dont really care!!!

There is a plan to possibly expand this into a trilogy possibly as a trilogy of shorts or even full length live actions, check out the offical website here,

Short Film: Guy Maddin's NIGHT MAYOR

Below is the latest short film from Guy Maddin called NIGHT MAYOR.

The film is about Nihad Ademi, an inventor from Bosnia who immigrates to Winnipeg. He builds, with his children, a machine called the "Telemodium" which uses the waves of Aurora Borealis to broadcast footage of "every day life for every day people." The footage is shown in different parts of Canada, coast to coast. Eventually, people begin to take to these images and start broadcasting their own, that is, until the police get involved.

The movie lasts 13 minutes and is shot in glorious black and white like his previous work of My Winnepeg a documentary about Maddin's home city. The whole style I would describe as experimental, original shot in the style of the black & white movies of the early 1900's  and this short movie is online courtesy of NFB -National Film Board of Canada and they describe the auteur as "an imaginative cinematic riff on the significance of a public film producer." Guy Maddin is very new to me and when I watched this short I got the feeling I liked what I was watching but if you asked me why I couldn't say but he is a very proud Canadian and his previous cv contains alot of Canadianesque projects, check it out Night Mayor below;

Trailer For YEAR OF THE CARNIVORE

When you go to a film festival alot of the movies screened are without film distributors for certain countries and off course showning there movie at a particular festival can help the movie get that elusive distribution rights. Even when you do get it, sometimes you may have to wait a very long time to see the movie on a theatrical release and YEAR OF THE CARNIVORE by Sook-Yin Lee is one example of how long you have to wait.
First screened away back  September 2009 at Toronto Film Festival, the movie has now been picked up by E1 Entertainment and they have posted a full trailer online, check it out below after the break . There's no news on when it actually will be release but do expect a summer release, as for UK & Ireland no word if it'll get a release.

Extended Promo for Idris Elba in LEGACY

The amount of people who actually thought Idris Elba was American was quite extraordinary, he's cockney London man through and through so the parts in The Wire, upcoming The Losers, 28 Weeks Later are testiment of how authentically American Elba can perceive to be, you could say the same about Eamonn Walker who he acts with in The wire and this LEGACY as he is also a Londoner.
Legacy is the duo's latest movie which had its world premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival back in February, the Scottish City that the studio Black Camel that backed the movie comes from as well as the setting for some of the Manhattan backdrops. The movie is now starting its way around the American & International festival scene and below is an extended promo trailer which gives a little more footage than the teaser and its a cross between a featurette / trailer.
I'm frustrated I couldn't get a press ticket for this movie when its screened in Glasgow as all ive heard & read is positive things. No UK or even American release date has been confirmed but hopefully later in the year the movie will get some sort of running in the cinema.

Theatrical Trailer (& Teaser) For DEATH AND CREMATION

Source HeyUguys
Like the source of this post I am a fan of Brad Douriff as a actor,maybe not so much the movies and television he has appeared in. Everything from One flew over the cuckoo's nest, voice of Chucky in Child's Play Franchise (and once again for the remake), Grima Wormtongue in Lord of The rings:2 towers and most recently in Werner Herzog's reworking of  Bad Lieutenant:Port of Call New Orleans. He is a fine character actor thats made a lot more bad movies than good ones.
So below is the the theatrical trailer (& teaser) for his latest movie Death & Cremation which he plays Stan a single recluse 59 year old man who contributes to society by offering cremation services in his funeral home. What Stan actually does is murder people he sees as social bullies and he takes Jared a young 17 year old bullied teen under his wing as a trainee, but as the police start to piece together the clues of the dissapeared Stan mustr decide if his trainee is worth keeping alive.
This part sounds perfect for Douriff who seems to play the jekyll and hyde type characters, nice, perfect friendly people on the outside but creep, evil sadistic on the inside.

Trailer For Phillip Bacon's YELLOW BELLY END

When I was studing Graphic Design at Salford University visually I tried to create a style that was minimal, effective as well as eye catching and YELLOW BELLY END definitely has those things.

Created by Phillip Bacon who was a illustration student at Manchester University and this was actually his graduation project and in this day and age it's very rare for an graduation project to be noticed. It's very absurd, obscure piece of animation, but to me its Bacon's visual style that makes me want to watch this. Hopefully the full animation will find itself online soon, meantime check out the trailer/clip below;

Below is an great looking sci-fi  animated short from the creative minds of Luis Bricenco and David Alapont...FARD.

This animation very much created in a neo futurist style ala Fritz Lang, very clean style, montone pallete . It is a French movie and there's no subtitles but the animation is very minimal in talk so its still worth a check if you dont speak French anyway.

Dramedy seems to be the big thing these days in movieland if its not action comedy and here is the trailer for upcoming indie dramedy PAPER MAN.
The movie stars Jeff Daniels who plays a failed  middle aged writer who forms a unlikely friendship with a 17 year old girl played by Emma Stone and both go through life with their imaginary friends; Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds) and a fellow teen called Christopher (Keiran Culkin). The pairs relationship does come with much disapproval from his wife(Lisa Kudrow) and his ' superhero friend'.
There isn't a release date yet for this movie in UK and Ireland but there will be a limited release stateside from April 23rd.
