My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies to get a 25th anniversary cinema release

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the release of Studio Ghibli’s acclaimed masterpieces GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES and MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO, STUDIOCANAL are delighted to announce a nationwide theatrical release with a chance to experience a recreation of the original Japanese double-bill feature that first launched these anime classics. An arresting combination from Studio Ghibli’s founding fathers: Hayao Miyazaki’s MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO, a lyrical fantasy about benevolent forest spirits and Isao Takahata’s GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, the heartbreaking tale of two children’s struggle to survive their firebombed city in World War 2, were launched together in 1988, showcasing the breadth of the anime powerhouse’s range of vision. Seemingly almost polar opposites in subject matter, Miyazaki’s gentle fable and Takahata’s grittier wartime adaptation both perfectly encapsulate the studio’s signature motif: its evocation of the wonder and innocence of childhood with their leading young protagonists, and showcase perfectly its defining style impressionistic imagery.

GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES
Set in Japan during World War II, GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES focuses on Seita and his little sister Setsuko. After their mother I skilled in an air raid, and with their father serving in the navy, they are forced to fight for survival in the devastated Japanese countryside. Food and shelter are scarce, and even their own relatives are too concerned with their own survival. All they have is each other and their belief that life must carry on. Takahata and his team, including character animator Yoshifumi Kondo, have created a visually stunning and emotionally powerful meditation on the devastating consequences of war.

MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO [read our blu-ray review]
While their mother recovers from an illness, Satsuki and her little sister Mei get away from it all in an idyllic rural retreat. Far from the bustle of the city, they discover a mysterious place of spirits and magic, and the friendship of the Totoro woodland creatures. Watch The Dramatic Trailer for Shanidar no Hana (The Flower of Shanidar)

If it's not Manga/Anime related or horror the Japanese do love their romance and if you like romance films you'll want to check the official trailer for Garkuryu Ishii's Shanidar no Hana (The Flower of Shanidar).

Shanidar no Hana is described as an original fantasy romance drama the tale of Otaki (Go Ayano) a researcher at an facility that cultivates a flower that grows on the bodies of certain women. The Flower of Shanidar is an highly sought after flower which help in scientific and Medical purposes so as the flowers grow so does Otaki's love for his assistant Kyoko (Haru Kuroki).

As the flowers grow they discover the women begin experiencing odd physical abnormalities which concerns Otaki who questions his faith in the project but Kyoko is the opposite she becomes more fascinated in the flowers. Shanidar no Hana opens in Japan on 20th July 2013.

Synopsis
A strange phenomenon takes place. A beautiful flower blooms on a selected woman's body and that flower is called the "Shanidar". When the Shanidar is in full bloom, the flower produces a substance which is then sold at a high cost to develop new drugs. Kenji Otaki (Gou Ayano) works as a researcher at the facility where the Shanidar is grown.

Watch Ghost In The Shell:Arise First Trailer

This animation franchise needs no introduction and it's production company 'Production I.G' announced last month there was going to be new Ghost In The Shell projects. That was a few weeks ago we had very few details but thankfully tonight we have some more details but even better we have the first trailer for Ghost In The Shell: Arise.

The new project will be a four part series with each episode lasting 50 minutes with the firs episode appearing in Japanese cinemas this Summer on 22nd June. The other episodes dates have not been confirmed yet the first part will be available to buy in Japan on Blu-Ray from 26th July, it's expected when Ghost In The Shell: Arise does arrive in UK it will come in the shape of a single home release a date we dont know just yet but dont be surprised if its 2014.

As for actual story all we know is this will be a prequel featuring Motoko when she was younger, Maaya Sakamoto will voice Motoko and she was the voice of the little girl who spoke the final line in 1995 first movie. The trailer is in Japanese so please practice your Japanese however if your lost for words thanks anime news network the translation is below the trailer.

GFF 2013 - Watch The American Trailer For Studio Ghibli's From Up on Poppy Hill

It maybe still doing the festival circuit rounds but 2013 finally looks the year Studio Ghibli's From Up On Poppy Hill will finally be released in English as tonight we have the US Trailer.

Based on a Manga of the same name , From Up on Poppy Hill is an coming of age story set in the 1960s 2 teenagers who fall in love in the wake of preventing an old clubhouse at the school their both at in Yokohama.

The film marks a return to directing from Goro Miyazaki with his father the legendary Hayao Miyazaki on scripting , the film on the animation equivalent of an Oscar back in 2011, the Japan Academy Prize for Animation. From Up On Poppy Hill certainly keeps the charm, beauty and even innocence we expect from Studio Ghibli, our only concern with this, is its not one of Studio Ghibli's 'fantasies' which are a easy sell however the source of this film should be enough to sell this one.

This a dubbed version of the film, we don't know yet if they'll be an UK voice cast like Arriety, if not Chris Noth, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ron Howard, Bruce Dern and Aubrey Plaza will provide the cast. GK Kids are the new American distributor taken over from Disney, Here in The UK we're still expecting Studiocanal to release this for now next UK screening is at Glasgow Youth Film Festival 10th February, USA Release will be 15th March .

Synopsis
The latest Studio Ghibli masterpiece is scripted by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son Goro. Set just before the 1964 Olympics, this anime features Umi, a hardworking teen looking after her family while her mother is abroad. One day she comes across a poem in the school newspaper, apparently written about her. A little while later she meets Shun, a daring young man who is part of a school movement to help save the local clubhouse from demolition. Umi joins the movement and she and Shun grow closer, until they are suddenly torn apart by a shocking secret…

Much A Do About Something! Glasgow Film Festival Launches 2013 Programme

On the day the first major film festival of the year Sundance opens in USA, the first official major film festival Glasgow Film Festival launches its 2013 programme which is nothing but exceptional.

Love will be in the air as the the 9th edition of the festival as the festival will open with 2 romantically themed film with the opening film Régis Roinsard’s Populaire starring French heart throb Romain Duris , The Artist's Bérénice Bejo and Déborah François.If you ever wondered what Joss Whedon did after Avengers Assemble its making the closing gala film Much A do About Something. A contemporary reworking of William Shakespeare's classic Play created in 12 days with a bunch of friends which include the likes of Amy Acker , Alexis Denisof, Fran Kranz, Clark Gregg, this is Whedon's foray into arthouse cinema. Populaire will open the festival on Valentine's Day 14 February, Much A Do About Nothing closing the festival on 24th February Oscars night, both films are UK premiere's.

In between these two great films this is where Glasgow Film Festival show their progression, strength with other 50 screenings many of them UK, European some cases World Premieres. Fans of Blue Valentine will be eager to see Derek Cianfrance's follow up The Place Beyond The Pines (UK première)starring Ryan Gosling, Eren Creevy’s Welcome To The Punch starring James McAvoy, Mark Strong will deliver some UK action. 2013 seems to be the year Korea's finest film makers try take over Hollywood when Park Chan-Wook's anticipated chiller Stoker starring Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman will take over Glasgow. Love is in the air as Glasgow Film Festival announces biggest-ever programme.
Film lovers, rejoice! Glasgow Film Festival today announced its most ambitious programme yet: bookended by two very different romantic comedies, kicking off on Valentine’s Day and ending on the night of the 85th Academy Awards.

Supported by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Creative Scotland and EventScotland, with 368 screenings, panel discussions, live performances and special events, this is the most extensive Glasgow Film Festival programme to date. It truly is a festival for the whole city, too, spreading out further than ever before into twenty six venues – everywhere from the stately surroundings of Glasgow Cathedral to a secret location somewhere in the depths of the Subway system. There are a record number of UK premieres amongst this year’s films, and GFF’s unique programme of special events celebrating the joy of cinema gets even more innovative in 2013, with contributions from comedians, musicians, comic book legends, fashion designers and even Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond. NEW FOR 2013
Three new programming strands for this year’s Festival were announced in November 2012.

Buena Onda: New Brazilian Cinema: As Brazil begins to take its place on the world stage, both as an emerging superpower and as the next host nation of the Olympics, we examine some of the great new work coming out of the country. It’s also a great excuse to throw a traditional Brazilian Carnival party, with a samba bus to take you to a secret location, and a special screening of 1970s classic Black Orpheus.

James Cagney: Top of the World, Ma! Our retrospective this year takes a long, loving look at the career of the Oscar-winning Hollywood tough guy, from the young street rat–turned gangster of Angels With Dirty Faces, to the menacing obsessive lover of Love Me or Leave Me.

Game Cats Go Miaow!: Robert Florence, star of the BBC comedy series Burnistoun, curates a look at the cross-over between cinema and video gaming. A panel of gaming experts review the hotly-anticipated Aliens: Colonial Marines on the big screen, followed by a comparison screening of Aliens itself. A whole host of comedians pack themselves in for Rab’s Video Game Empty, a quiz show with a difference, and we take a searing look at epic game Dark Souls and the whole of the dark fantasy genre.

Our brand new Festival Club takes over CCA’s Terrace Bar every day and night for the duration of the Festival. Rub shoulders with filmmakers and visiting guests, ask the GFF team for advice planning your schedule, take part in a daily programme of debates and discussions and then dance the night away with a great selection of DJs and live acts. Glasgow Short Film Festival: 7–10 February
Scotland’s leading short film festival returns with a packed programme of screenings, workshops and parties. This year sixty films compete for the Bill Douglas Award for International Short Film and the Scottish Short Film Award. The 2013 programme pays tribute to the behemoth of underground cinema George Kuchar, forecasts tomorrow’s US indie darlings with a showcase of filmmaking from Columbia University graduates, celebrates the groundbreaking work of Caroline Sascha Cogez and assembles heavyweight panels to ask ‘why can’t women make feature films?’ across a series of discussions during the weekend. www.glasgowfilm.org/gsff

Glasgow Youth Film Festival: 3–13 February
The only film event in the UK curated entirely by 15—18-year-olds presents international film premieres, workshops and events for child, teenage and young adult audiences. Glasgow Film Festival announces 3 New Strands For The 2013 Line-up

They may not call themselves an international film festival but the Glasgow Film Festival is growing in stature every year with 8th, 2012 film festival proving they are the fastest growing film festival in UK. The third biggest film festival will hold there 9th festival next February between 14 and 24th February 2013.

With 3 months to go until the next festival, the festival organizers have announced 3 of the strands. The films of James Cagney will take centre stage in the very popular retrospective strand. New cinema will focus on the films of Brazil and a brand new strand which has a big screen look at video games.

Robert Florence of BBC Scotland’s Burnistoun will join the GFF team to curate a gaming strand called Game Cats Go Miaow! The highlights of the strand is a live review of the new Aliens: Colonial Marines game with James Cameron's Aliens been shown right after the review. Also a special costume Gala Cosplay Go Miaow! With a very special film been screened possibly anime or comic book film.

Brazil is fast becoming a leading light in cinema and in the Buena Onda: New Brazilian Cinema Strand Xingu (dir Cao Hamburger), Prime Time Soap (A novellas das 8) (dir Odilon Rocha), Neighbouring Sounds (O som ao redor) (dir Kleber Mendonca Filho) and Southwest (Sudoeste) (dir Eduardo Nunes), will all play showcasing the diversity and quality of the films from the country.

After very popular Gene Kelly Retrospective, the 2013 festival's James Cagney will go down a treat with adoring film fans. The Public Enemy (1931), Angels With Dirty Faces (1938), The Roaring Twenties (1939), White Heat (1949) and Love Me Or Leave Me (1955) are all set to play and like every year the strand finishes with a bang Gene Kelly's finished with The Gene Kelly ceilidh, this years I can guarantee will beat this, all will be revealed at press launch!

The official press launch will happen 16th January 2013 and we will be in attendance and nearer the time we will share you the programme details when we get them. Public tickets will go on sale the following day, 17th January 2013.

JAMES CAGNEY: TOP OF THE WORLD, MA! focuses on the extraordinary life and times of Hollywood's Oscar-winning tough guy. Meanwhile, the star of BBC Scotland's Burnistoun (and obsessive gamer) Robert Florence joins the GFF team to curate GAME CATS GO MIAOW!, which takes a star-studded big-screen look at video games - as they grow ever-more cinematic, could they begin to challenge the movie-going experience?

This month also saw the launch of the festival's official trailer which was directed by Lesley Barnes in a collaboration with animator Bruce Cameron both members of Toads Caravan. Sound comes from members of Glasgow Indie pop band Belle & Sebastian

Manga Entertainment To Release Shiki Part 2 In December

Following the October release of part one, Manga Entertainment have announced the UK DVD release of Shiki Part 2 on DVD. Shiki is creepy psychological thriller based on a Manga by Ono Fuyumi and Fujisaki Ryuu about a village surrounded by death.

At a time when vampires have become ubiquitous in popular culture, from juvenile novels and live-action films to anime, Shiki stands out for its deeply unsettling tension and suspense.

When citizens of a secluded village begin dying off in alarming numbers, the sole hospital's head doctor tries desperately to save his patients - but his efforts are in vain. Entire families are wiped out while others desert their homes. All hell breaks loose as the villagers discover their loved ones' corpses are rising from the grave with an insatiable thirst for human blood. New Trailer & Clip For Takashi Miike's Shield Of Straw

Takashi Miike is a big favorite at Cinehouse HQ so when his Ace Attorney recently played in Glasgow at Scotland Loves Anime we where a bit annoyed we couldn't see it. Next spring his next film Shield Of Straw (Wara No Tate)will be released in Japan and our friends at Twitch have gotten their hands on the film's latest teaser trailer and clip.

Starring Fujiwara Tatsuya who may not be familiar by name but recognizable from the cult film Battle Royale, Deathnote and Toyoda Toshiaki's I'm Flash where he played a cult leader. For his latest film he will be becoming a cold hearted confessed child killer. Based on a Kuichi Kazuhiro novel Shield of Straw when a child killer (Fujiwara) is captured he must be escorted across country by 2 cops (Osawa Takao and Matsushima Nanako)to face trail. What may sound a simple task but the grandfather of the young victim is a very wealthy man not happy that things will be sorted out the conventional way offers 12 million to anyone who can kill his grandchild's killer on route to court.

This film looks like it'll challenge the morality and power of money and the control it has over people. What people will do to get their hands on the amount of money on offer is crazy, will there a psychological thriller mix thrown in too? All will be revealed when the film is release 26 April 2013 in Japan.

Ninagawa is a powerful man in Japanese politics and with top economic connections.His granddaughter is then murdered. The suspect is Kunihide Kiyomaru (Tatsuya Fujiwara). Kunihide Kiyomaru has a prior conviction for assaulting and killing a girl 8 years ago. The police could never apprehend the suspect in the prior killing.
Three months after the murder of his granddaughter, Ninagawa places a whole page ad in the 3 big Japanese newspapers. The ad states "Please kill this man Kunihide Kiyomaru and I will pay you 1,000,000,000 yen as a reward." Meanwhile, Kunihide Kiyomaru sees the ad and begins to fear for his life. Kunihide Kiyomaru then turns himself in at the Fukuoka Police Station. Five detectives from the security section (SP) of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department travel to Fukuoka to escort Kunihide Kiyomaru back to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. The distance between Fukuoka and Tokyo is apprixmately 1,200 km. During their fateful trip, a significant portion of the Japanese population plot to kill Kunihide Kiyomaru. Many of those people, actually pursue Kunihide Kiyomaru while he goes back to Tokyo to get the 1 billion yen reward. The lonely fight of the five detectives to protect this man begins ...

Classic Anime Ninja Scroll Coming to Blu-Ray First Time

Anime classic Ninja Scroll comes to Blu-ray for the first time ever! Available in a limited edition Double Play Blu-ray/DVD Steelbook as well as separately on Blu-ray and DVD, Yoshiaki Kawajiri's wonderfully animated 1993 masterpiece sets the bar for ninja action, as wandering swordsman Jubei and female ninja Kagero carve their way through a host of super-powered bad guys. Gory, visceral and still shocking after nearly two decades, Ninja Scroll demands a place on any anime fan's shelf.

Set during Japan's Tokugawa period, Ninja Scroll opens with female ninja Kagero - the sole survivor of a squad sent to investigate a plagued village - at the mercy of Tessai, a monster of a man who can turn his skin to stone. Rescued by wandering ronin Jubei Kibagami, the pair discover from shady shogunate spy Dakuan that Tessai is one of the Eight Devils of Kimon - a band of super ninja apparently led by Jubei's old nemesis Himuro Genma, whom he insists that he killed years ago.

Tricked into helping Kagero and Dakuan take down the Eight Devils, expert swordsman Jubei must push his finely-honed fighting skills to the limit if he is to defeat his deadly adversaries, who include shadow assassin Shijima, blind warrior Utsutsu, explosives specialist Zakuro and, of course, the evil Himuro Genma himself. Pitted against such merciless foes, only one thing is certain; Jubei Kibagami must kill or be killed.

Along with Akira and Ghost In The Shell, Ninja Scroll was one of the key titles that opened the West's eyes to what anime could achieve. Stunningly animated and shockingly violent, Ninja Scroll combines sex, death, action, intrigue and copious fountains of blood to create an all-time anime classic.

Written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust), Ninja Scroll is made by veteran animation studio Madhouse, whose long list of credits include acclaimed movies such as Summer Wars, Paprika, The Girl Who Lept Through Time and Perfect Blue as well as series like Death Note and Black Lagoon. November 26th 2012 is the day all anime fans in UK have to include in their diaries, when Ninja Scroll is released on Blu Ray, DVD (re-release) and Special Steelbook edition.

Destructive Teaser Trailer For Studio Ghibli's Live Action Short 'God Warrior'

Studio Ghibli probably the most recognisable Japanese Animation studio in the world, they need no introduction their films are adored worldwide. The studio have joined forces with the creators of Evagelion to create God Warrior Appears In Tokyo (Kyoshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru), the iconic studio's first foray into live action and a trailer has appeared online , we have to say we're impressed!

Evangelion director Hideko Anno is directing with Studio Ghibli producing the short film (running just under 10 minutes mark) has been created for an animation exhibition focussing on special effects at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo. The design of the Warrior is inspired by Nausicaa The Valley of The Wind (Anno was a key animator)with the film created using no CGI which is unusual in this day and age especially considering the film's genre usually known for its heavy usage of CGI. They have used a technique called Tokusatsu which basically means they used miniature models in the way they used to do in the old school creature feature/sci-fi films like Godzilla.

No word if the film will be shown online,but if your fortunate to be able to visit Tokyo the film will be playing at the exhibition it was created for. Enjoy the impressive trailer and tell me wouldn't it be great if this became a feature live or animated?

This weekend it's time to give Cinehouse it's deserved upgrade. This Sunday (possibly Monday) Cinehouseuk.blogspot.com will soon become cinehouse.co.uk after nearly 3 years in existence(3 years this September) the blog deserves its early birthday present. So keep your eyes opened for the change(eye on facebook page too for updates) , then upgrade your bookmarks. With new upgrade comes opportunities to join the team, so we're recruiting!

A lot of teens are embarrassed by their parents, but Rin Okumura has more right than most - his father turns out to be Satan himself! Combining sizzling action scenes, quirky comedy and luscious art design, Blue Exorcist follows Rin on his quest to become the strongest exorcist at the True Cross Academy so that he can give his demonic dad the ass-kicking he deserves.

Quick tempered and fond of a good scrap, 15-year-old Rin Okumura has grown up being called a ‘demon child’ but it's still a shock to discover that he is, in fact, the literal son of Satan. When his guardian, Father Fujimoto Shirou, dies defending him against demons, Rin defies his Hellish heritage and enrols at the True Cross Academy, determined to become the world's strongest exorcist.
Starting any new school is a challenge, but Rin's got it tougher than most. Not only must he master his deadly demonic powers and fight the forces of darkness, but Rin also finds himself in the unenviable position of being instructed by his genius twin brother Yukio, who is already a teacher at the Academy! Then there's the question of how Rin's fellow classmates - shy Shiemi, hot-blooded Bon and haughty Izumo - will react if they ever discover his true parentage…

Blue Exorcist is a genuine all-rounder, an anime that's equally at home with hi-octane fight scenes, fast-paced comedy, bittersweet drama and even a dash of romance. Starring a strong pair of protagonists in Rin and Yukio, the shonen series also features a substantial supporting cast, gorgeous graphics and surprisingly deep character development. All in all, Blue Exorcist is one Hell of a show.

Final 'Extreme' Promo Trailer for BLOOD C: THE LAST DARK

Just before Christmas we gave you the trailer for BLOOD C: THE LAST DARK , the new upcoming anime from Clamp (worked on the story) and Production I.G (worked on Animation), tonight we have a new promo trailer. lasting nearly 4 minutes long the new promo gives you the best sense of what to expect from Saya the teenage vampire hunter, if you love the Blood franchise this will be another fine edition to that ever popular series.

Despite the use of the Youth Ordinance Bill to enforce curfews for minors and regulate the use of the internet, young people continue to fight for their own freedom through underground methods. One such group calls themselves Surat. They have decided to take on Fumito Nanahara, a man who has great influence on the political world, and basically controls Tokyo with an iron fist. While using the internet as a weapon to discover more information about Fumito, they learn about "Tower", the secret organization behind Fumito which engages in human experimentation.

When members of Surat attempt to set up an ambush in the subway to expose the truth behind "Tower", mysterious creatures suddenly appear and attack the passengers. During this crisis, Saya appears - a young girl who uses a Japanese blade to slay the Old Ones. The same Saya who lost everything dear to her in that horrifying incident in Ukishima Province. What sort of "experiment" is Fumito and "Tower" trying to conduct using the Old Ones? And can Saya finally deliver vengeance to Fumito?

Now, the final battle begins...
