When Sushi Fights Back In Japanese Monster Short Monster Roll

Been a kid of the 1980's we got spoiled some awesome cult stuff from the decades that went before us, a little more than kids now get despite those cult films & Tv been more available than ever. From the 1960's sci-fi tv, Jackie Chan films, Monkey, Water Margin, Godzilla and creature features especially Japanese Monster films. Dan Blank's Monsterroll is certainly a homage to those Japanese films even a little Roger Corman a story which sees giant sea creatures who exact revenge on those who break ancient promises and Sushi chefs attempting to save the day who probably would love to make Sushi out of the monsters.

Monster Roll is a Proof-of-concept for a feature about sushi chefs fighting sea monsters. It's a crazy idea, but one we just really wanted to see made. Blank have made and they hope soon to make it into the feature and this is a well constructed film which I'll even go as far as saying the CGI actually looks really good. This crazy looking film keeps a hardcore fan of the creature feature films like myself smiling throughout the 5 short minutes hoping these guys make this into the feature, this is crazy fun!

Watch The Awesome Looking Short The Killing Joke

Never criticize a  Short film apart from been some really cool films that are at times superior to it's feature length cousin. Let's take Sebastian Lopez's The Killing Joke a perfect example of great short film about a woman who comes a across a red balloon attached to a small box  she opens leading to a sadistic clown hunting her down....

The Killing Joke is a 15 minute suspense/fiction short film about a mysterious woman that finds a red balloon tied up to a curious little box on an eery derelict street. Using classic elements of suspense and working within a seventies aesthetic, 'The Killing Joke' is an action packed film that pays homage to some of the horror movies from that era.

The piece was shot during four intense days of filming in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires. The micro budget production was shot using just two 7d canon cameras. The composition and CGI effects for 'The Killing Joke' required months of 'invisible' digital retouching to create the panoramic, yet claustrophobic atmosphere that pervades throughout the movie.

The Film editor was Sabrina Mottino.

Sebastián López wrote and directed the story, and was also responsible for all the impressive post and composition work.

Colin Devlin created the Original Soundtrack, working from his home studio in LA he collaborated on the project with Sebastian from it's inception, creating a wonderful striking symmetry between sound and image.This is the second collaboration for Sebastian and Colin, the first being an action packed trailer created for a fictitious movie called 'Vertical' that went viral on the net, creating a serious buzz for the young director.

Actors Gustavo Marzo and Clarisa Staracci Worked together to portray the intense characters seen on screen.

This is why I love short films sometimes more than feature films as final result compared to some of the crap that's plagued our cinemas recently these films are a breath of fresh air. Some the ideas may not be 100% original but script wise, visually, structurally superior asks the question maybe some of those feature films maybe should be short films or simply should have stayed short film. We're a little disappointed we haven't covered short films as much as we should have this year but things are changing starting tonight with Tyson Wade Johnston's Seed. 

Seed is set in the year 2071, where technology has brought mankind to the brink of colonization on a planet named Gaia, one astronaut takes on an isolated mission and discovers unearthly horrors that could bring an end to human life on this planet. This is a tale of colonization gone wrong , a film that feels like a modern war film too, its a visual treat plenty of atmosphere most of all this looks a professionally polished CGI film worthy of  14 minutes of your time.

Watch The Fantastic Portrait Of A Projectionist Short

When we go to the cinema we do seem to take things for granted and when changes happen we only seem to comment what we see in front of us if you like to say 'shop floor'. The ticket prices, snack prices, atmosphere of the cinema screen, quality of the film but everytime we do this we do forget probably the most important person....The projectionist. He or she is responsible of setting up the magic we pay to watch enfold in front of us but if your a lover of film (or cinephile as we call them at Cine and The People's Movies) they are also going through drastic changes thanks to the digital age.

35mm is dying been replaced by digital films, you could say it's the end of film, as many old films are too fragile to be transferred, you may not know if your local cinema has changed but where is 35mm film still running? Good question, Ridwaan Fridie, a projectionist from South Africa still is living the dream and he is the subject of Philip Bloom's fantastic short film documentary Portrait Of A Projectionist.

Watch The Awesome Stephan Zlotescu's True Skin Short

Who said short film makers don't have talent? I've heard a few people say that in the past however quite a few feature films  of the past 20 plus years have stemmed from an short film idea and Stephan Zlotescu's True Skin could be the next short film to get the feature length treatment. The film has sparked a bidding war from the studios for the rights the full 6 minute short has been released online for your full enjoyment before one of the big studios destroy thr film integrity with a mediocrity version.

True Skin is set in a future where augmented humans and robots co-exist together with humans. Kaye buys a prototype robot that not only sees him fighting his own humanity but also something much larger. Incredible looking stuff a big Blade Runner feels to the film which was shot in Bangkok Thailand.

Watch The Children's Dark Fantasy Short Lost For Words

The world can be a magical place to a child but it's also be a dangerous one which was a theme that kids fantasy films used to play however things ave changed. Every seems to be a little dull too squeeky clean, over stylised predictable however Canadian filmmaker Sean Wainsteim  remembers when we embraced the dark elements in his superb 10 minute short Lost For Words, a short film love-letter to the libraries I grew up in and the stories and illustrations that found me there. An unusual girl leads a naive lost little boy through an eerie fairy-tale land filled with fantastic creatures and powerful words.

Trailer For Ray Badury Fan Short Film Fahrenheit 451

Indie specialists Other Side Films have released the trailer for their short film Fahrenheit 451, based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Ray Bradbury.

In a world where the written word is rendered obsolete by the sheer onslaught of technological advancement, ‘anti-social’ and ‘offensive’ material is tracked down and destroyed by fire.

The timing and nature of the film couldn’t be more prescient given the debate that Kindle and other e-readers have sparked. Bradbury himself died only weeks ago and his dystopian novel is often upheld as a bleak possibility of the future by those that fear the disappearance of the written word and the population’s hunger for new media.

The film itself is a short snapshot of the life of Guy Montag, a fireman possessed by his need to hunt down and destroy books that are offensive to society.

Directed by Albert Art, the film has been in the works for a year and a half, with artists from Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and the UK coming together to create Farenheit 451.

The digital premiere for Fahrenheit 451 takes place in July.

I know its been out a few weeks now but this weekend I'll finally get a chance to see Moonrise Kingdom and what's really got me into the mood to see Wes Anderson's film is the trailer and clip from RETURN TO SENDER. The videos are from Swiss born indie director Denise Hauser new short film which was inspired by her new life in Central Norway, the film has the radiance of Wes Anderson film, charming, quirky and a little bit cookie a style that Anderson fans will really warm too. A fantastic live action, miniatures and animation, so does Mr Anderson have to watch his back now?

A female scientist lives a lonely and isolated life on the coast of Greenland. She is looking for the perfect partner to keep her company under such harsh conditions. One day, she discovers a website which enables her to grow her perfect match, but there is a possibility that things may go wrong.
