EIFF 2012: Brake Review

Stephen Dorff stars in Gabe Torres' claustrophobic thriller, Brake, which proves to be far more than another Buried. Receiving its UK premiere at this years' Edinburgh International Film Festival, Brake provides some highly entertaining B-Movie thrills alongside another stellar performance from Dorff.

Secret Service agent, Jeremy Reins (Dorff) wakes up trapped in the boot (or trunk, for the non-Brits) of a car, with no recollection as to how he got there. Reins is forced to endure a series of physical and mental tortures as terrorists attempt to extract the location of Roulette, the President's secret bunker.

Tim Mannion's screenplay may not be the most original piece of writing in recent years, with obvious parallels to Rodrigo Cortes' Buried being raised. However, Mannion does attempt to deviate from his predecessor with the inclusion of some well contained action. We're talking shootouts, flooding and bees (calm down Wicker Man '06 fans), all just some of the high-octane antics that you can expect from Brake. These thrills combined with Torres' tense, claustrophobic direction, make Brake, a enthralling, well contained action film. You have got to hand it to a team that can make eighty-five minutes of film set in one claustrophobic location, this engaging.

As the only actor on screen throughout the majority of Brake, Stephen Dorff truly excels in his performance, both physically and emotionally. The viewers' gaze rests firmly on the Somewhere star, feeling totally connected to the character of Jeremy - we are with him during this whole ordeal. Even when handling some atrocious dialogue or Jack Bauer style screams, Dorff's performance retains a sincerity and likeability whilst also managing to stay convincing as an action hero, surely no easy task when you are confined to a Perspex box.

As well as the clichés to be found in Brake's dialogue, they can also be seen through several narrative features like Jeremy's remorseful phone call to his distant wife or through Tom Berenger's shady CIA big shot character. However, Brake does make up for this with some unexpected paranoia-infused twists lurking in its conclusion.

Brake is an enjoyably tense thriller, boasting a stellar performance from the inimitable Stephen Dorff. Several high-octane thrills and an unexpected conclusion ensures that Torres' claustrophobic film is a completely worthwhile watch.

Here at cinehouse (and at times The Peoples Movies) we do get alot Kickstarter film projects, we try our best to cover most if not all them. Today's project was spotted by our Canadian friends at Twitch and one type of short film we adore is horror, sci-fi (we love genres though) especially and Mischa Rozema's SUNDAYS does seem to fill our fix. The Amsterdam based commercial director hopes her Sci-fi short will soon become a full feature a story built around the idea that one day a computer based intelligence will exceed a human one arriving via a technological singularity.

Visually this looks great, storyline decent my only concern like many people with great short films can the story be easily adapted or will it be overstretched? Whatever you think you can check out the film below and below that read the kickster information. You can support the film here.

Sundays (working title) is a feature film idea created and written by Dutch commercials director Mischa Rozema. It is a project he has been living and sleeping with for the past years. It is the result of stories inhabiting his head, images that need to be visualised and the the desire to create a film completely different to anything we’ve seen before. The story is there, so is the research. What we are asking your help with is the opportunity to create a short film - the first step on the path to realising a feature film - using the skills and passion of Mischa and his team at PostPanic and Savage.
We're raising money through Kickstarter to make this short film. We want to show what is visually possible when creative integrity is closely guarded from the beginning. We don’t want to risk diluting Mischa’s vision by 3rd parties forcing him to become more mainstream and commercial. We want to show what he is capable of as a storyteller when he has complete control over the direction.

What is 'Sundays' about?
We are fast approaching an event, unparalleled in our history. A tipping point known as a technological singularity. It's the moment when computer power surpasses human intelligence. This moment is inevitable. Our world will change forever.
We are on the verge of having to decide the future of humanity. In order to maintain we might have to change the very definition of what it means to be human. So what exactly is 'human'? Where does it begin and where does it stop. Are we willing to stretch its definition and our ethics to corners we never could have imagined. Is there an infinite deadline on our existence?
This is the story of what it means to be human and how the characteristics of what makes us special stand the test of time. It's evident that technologies are now tied to our evolution as a species. Does our biology define us as human beings or is it the ideals for which humanity stands for?

Love it or hate it's been released this July on DVD and Blu Ray in UK&;Ireland Liliana Cavani’s THE NIGHT PORTER(Il portiere di notte). One of the most shocking and controversial movies ever made, this scintillatingly sexy story of forbidden love and the aphrodisiacal effects of decadence and cruelty comes to Blu-ray for the first time in the UK. The film by many critics was slated eroticising Nazi iconography as well as been 'pro-fascist', it kick-started the 'Naziplotation' sub genre too which saw a barrage of similar nazi themed sex films too.

Vienna, 1957. Max (Dirk Bogarde), a former Nazi concentration camp officer, is now employed as a respectable night porter at one of the city's most luxurious hotels. Still anguished by the guilt of his actions during the war, he attempts to relieve his conscience by devoting himself to his work while awaiting the upcoming trial of himself and his fellow Nazi officers. But one fateful evening Max's disturbing past catches up with him in the form of the beautiful and alluring Lucia (Charlotte Rampling). Now the wife of a respected American classical composer, almost 15 years earlier Lucia was a teenage concentration camp inmate and Max's lover in an aberrant sado-masochistic relationship. Bound by their memories and uncontrollably drawn to each other, Max and Lucia rekindle their bizarre love affair. But their future together becomes threatened by other ghosts from the past…

Despite having long divided critical and public opinion due to its shocking subject matter and imagery (respected critic Roger Ebert famously described it as “as nasty as it is lubricious, a despicable attempt to titillate us by exploiting memories of persecution and suffering. It is – I know how obscene this sounds – Nazi chic.”) The Night Porter is a courageous and uncompromising piece of filmmaking that has come to be regarded as a classic of European cinema. Comparable to Visconti’s “The Damned”, Bertolucci’s “The Conformist” and Tinto Brass’ “Salon Kitty”, this is a powerful cinematic experience that, once seen is impossible for forget.

EIFF 2012: Red Band And International Trailer For V/H/S

This coming week here at Cinehouse (& The Peoples Movies) one of the films we're really looking forward too is the screening of Horror Anthology V/H/S. The film looks like it might potentially give the found footage a kick back into popular cinema bringing together 6 of the best /some upcoming horror directors Ti West (House Of The Devil, The Innkeepers), Adam Wingard and Simon Barret (A Horrible Way To Die), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell The Dead).

The premise of the story is about a gang of  criminals who are hired to break into a house to steal a VHS tape. To find the tape the gang must trawl through the large collection tapes on offer  watching them one by one watching everything from masked killers, vivisection, sexy female vampire, lots of blood, screaming and did I say screaming? Wishing they probably never watched them! The past few days a red band trailer has found its way online really showcasing the chaos, the shock and screams that lie ahead for the viewer with each director providing a little vignette probably catch some viewers unexpectedly too.

The film has been picking up some great buzz on the festival circuit and this week the film will arrive in UK and Edinburgh Film Festival(stayed tuned for our review) which at the moment is the films only UK date.Once we get word on when this scaremonger of a beast of a film will arrive in blightly we will share the good news with you, our inklings are that the films next UK viewing will be London Film4 Frighfest! It would be a good bet late Ocotber onwards we will see this one be released in UK however August 31st for VOD and October 5th theatrical release dates for USA !

Mark Hamill Going AIRBOURNE This July

Hell quite literally breaks loose at 30,000 feet as passengers on board a Trans-Atlantic bound for New York come face-to-face with an ancient evil. But wait we have a Jedi Master on hand so will the terrified passengers be rescued only one way to find out is to watch Mark Hamill's  first stint in front of the camera in many years in Brittish chiller AIRBOURNE.

As a severe storm front rapidly closes in on the UK, all flights out of East Midlands airport are cancelled – all save Atlantic Sky Airways Flight 686, bound for New York. Shortly after take-off, several passengers become concerned when one of their number inexplicably goes missing. Their anxieties are further increased when it becomes apparent that the flight has veered off course and it is revealed that the plane is carrying an interesting item of cargo: a rare and extremely valuable ancient Chinese vase. The assumption is that terrorists are responsible, but nobody on board is showing their hand – for now. With tensions rising amongst the passengers and crew, violence soon breaks out, forcing those behind the deadly plot to expose their identities.

Meanwhile, on the ground, concerned aviation chiefs and the military have together authorised the launch of fighter jets to deal with what they believe could be a deadly hijack situation. But hijacking is soon proved to be the least of anybody’s worries when the owner of the vase recounts a myth surrounding its ancient origins.

In the fine tradition of other high-altitude thrillers such as“Executive Decision”, “Snakes On A Plane”, “Passenger 57”, “Red Eye” and “Con Air” and the winner of the British Lion Award at the 2012 British Independent Film Festival, Airborne is a Twilight Zone-esque thriller with a hint of the supernatural and some amazing production values that, for us, places it leagues ahead of what we’ve come to expect from the usual “gangster flick-centric” British indie genre movies. To top it off, it also features a welcome return to the screen for Mark Hamill who in recent years has almost been reclusive while establishing himself as one of the most in-demand voiceover artists in the business. 


Airbourne will be terrifying British skies when it's released by Chelsea Films on DVD July 30th (new release date). The film also stars  Julian Glover (Games Of Thrones), Gemma Atkinson (Boogie Woogie), Simon Phillips (The Rise And Fall Of A White Collar Hooligan), Alan Ford (Snatch), and Fiona Ryan (The Tudors).

EIFF 2012: PUSHER (2012) Review

Luis Prieto's British made update of Nicolas Winding Refn's 1996 film, Pusher, receives its world premiere at this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival. The Spanish director has presented us with a gripping, adrenaline fuelled ride, which is by far one of the most exciting British crime thrillers in recent years. Frank (Richard Coyle) may just be London's most unlucky drug dealer. After a deal goes horrendously wrong, he finds himself owing a ruthless Serbian crime boss over £55,000. In a desperate search for money, Frank soon finds his life spiralling out of control and relationships with those around him beginning to crumble.

It is hard to deviate from certain traditional elements in this genre, for example, risky deals and unrelenting Mr. Big figures are always going to feature. However, these elements feel utterly fresh and skilfully handled in Pusher, thanks to Prieto's energy as a storyteller. The Spanish director's film feels like a fusion of the classic British crime thriller (Coyle's performance drawing some parallels to that of Stacey Keach in 1977 feature, The Squeeze), with an added vibrant, modern twist.

The tension rarely drops in Pusher, creating a truly gripping ride. This is furthered by Simon Dennis' striking cinematography - creating a visually impressive piece taking on pulsing neon infused clubs to dank warehouses, with equal impact. Pusher also captures the ruthless and gritty criminal underworld of London through Frank's encounters with Serbian crime Boss, Milo (Zlatko Buric, star of Refn's original Pusher Trilogy) - most notably in one suspenseful scene involving bolt cutters and a finger. The high octane thrills are paired with a energetic electronic dance score from Orbital, fitting the tone of Pusher perfectly.

Even Pusher's day by day narrative structure acts as reflection of Frank's impending deadline, ebbing closer. This means it is hard not to feel part of the dealers' journey as he uses every resource he has to get money - whether it be calling in on old loans from vulnerable customers or simply by taking it from the sleaziest clients. Even Pushers' emotive conclusion is cut off in the height of anguish and tension, leaving the viewer to question the outcome.

Richard Coyle's solid lead performance thrusts us into the desperation and angst that faces the character, however, we as the audience are always on his side. Agyness Dean's supporting turn as Frank's girlfriend, Flo, proves equally flawless. Flo simply wants a better life for herself and Frank - she works as a dancer and escort, careers that are beneath her, and as viewer you want to see her and Frank happy. Zlatko Buric's intense performance as Milo also proves to be a chief scene stealer throughout Pusher.

Luis Prieto's Pusher proves to be an exhilarating, thrill ride that holds the viewer in a vice-like grip from start to finish. The vibrant cinematography combined with an outstanding lead performance from Richard Coyle and a razor sharp score from Orbital, help make Pusher one of the strongest British crime thrillers in recent years.

EIFF 2012: Fred Review

Richard Ledes' heartfelt drama, Fred, receives its world premiere at this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival, and this poignant feature is likely to strike an emotional chord with many of us.   

Elliott Gould stars as Fred, an elderly man living in his house of over fifty years, with his Alzheimer's suffering wife, Susan (Judith Roberts).  Fred's grown-up children (Fred Melamed and Stephanie Roth Haberle) try to convince him to move to a care home with Susan, but he is not ready to leave yet.  

Fred is a delicately handled film, with Ledes directing in an almost fly on the wall style. As a viewer, we feel part of the family's most intimate moments, which results in a completely absorbing watch. It is impossible not to get drawn in as the family sing Susan's favourite songs to her or reminisce with Fred.

Alongside some striking cinematography from Valentina Caniglia, Ledes has the ability to make almost any shot seem poignant and heartfelt. This is at its most prevalent through shots of the slow withering of the exterior of Fred's home or the near spiritual representation of the nature that surrounds it.

Ledes' screenplay is a wonderful fusion of deadpan comedy (mostly courtesy of the perfectly timed comic skills of Gould and Melamed) and touching drama. Fred also has its share of challenging moments - it is difficult to watch Fred's struggle with his wife's condition as he also attempts to battle his own ailing health. This is shown in one such sequence where Fred attempts to make Susan grip the telephone, but loses his temper at her inability to do so.

Fred reflects issues that are likely to strike a chord with many of us, excelling in its delicate portrayal of the aging process. These well crafted characters ensure the viewer feels the dilemma of Fred's children, as well as empathising with Fred's desire to grasp to his independence at home. These issues are perfectly represented from a wonderful cast.

Judith Roberts truly excels in her turn as Susan, a strong willed woman that the audience completely warm to. Seeing Susan coping with the struggles of everyday life and finding joy with her loved ones, amidst the effects of Alzheimers is heart warming.  Elliott Gould is perfectly cast in the title role, shining through welcome moments of humour, as well as more emotionally heavy scenes. Fred Melamed, impresses greatly with his deadpan wit, whilst Stephanie Roth Haberle gives a touching performance as Fred's exasperated daughter.

Fred is a delicately crafted and heartfelt portrayal of the aging process. The combination of touching drama and deadpan humour alongside stellar performances from the main players, proves a winning combination.

Five young school friends set to spend a week together at summer camp avoiding the hassles of parental supervision unexpectedly find themselves on a truly out-of-this-world adventure when their class rabbit goes missing. Searching for their pet, the kids find and rescue what they believe to be an injured dog. As it turns out, the creature is actually a stranded alien named Pochi, who rewards their kindness with the offer of a trip to the moon! However, this simple sightseeing excursion to view the lunar landscape up close spins out of control and leads to a thrilling chase across the galaxy, with the five friends and their extra-terrestrial companion on the run from evil aliens intent on ruling the universe.

Stylistically reminiscent of Mamoru Hosoda’s “Summer Wars” with touches of Miyazaki’s “My Neighbour Totoro”, this is a stunning piece of animation that will thrill adults and children alike. If you’re a fan of Studio Ghibli but wished their output could be a little bit edgier in content, then this will be right up your street.

The Horror Channel Movie Of The Month is Drew Cullingham's bloody brilliant Umbrage: The First Vampire, which is broadcast on Friday 22 June.

The film stars legendary British actor Doug Bradley and concerns an unscrupulous antique dealer's ancient mirror that serves as a portal for shadowy beings to be unleashed into the night with a thirst for blood.

Drew talks about his outstanding directorial debut and his plans for the future.

Q: How did you start in the movie business?

DC: Slowly! There was a time when all the things I take for granted now, all the people (actors and crew) and all the facilities and so on, were a faraway dream. I worked a little in TV, mostly filming food related VTs for live shows, and I cut my teeth bit by bit on a few short films. Of course even then I was begging, borrowing and stealing in terms of kit and so on. Well, not stealing, obviously! It was a useful testing ground though, as both in the TV jobs and in the short films I was almost doing the directing by default, because I was doing everything else! I believe a director should know one end of a camera from the other, and understand how sound works, how long make-up can take to do, basic editing etc. Of course I would say that, because I've worked most aspects of filming! The biggest step was to become a proper producer, and to actually decide to helm a feature. That was scary, because it meant going out looking for real money, and actually employing a full crew. It was pretty much a leap of faith really. I scraped together a little budget for Umbrage, and the rest just followed on, sometimes easily and sometimes not!

Q: Have you always been a big fan of horror movies?

DC: Absolutely. Not just movies either. I was a voracious reader when I was younger, and my parents were actually quite strict in terms of how much TV I could watch, so I used to hide beneath the covers at night with a torch and a pilfered James Herbert novel or something similar. Before long I was an avid fan of Clive Barker and Edgar Allen Poe. I also was 'of age' in the mid 1980s. When I say 'of age' I mean that age when you are very impressionable and watch things you are far too young to watch! And as we all know, the 80s were chock full of what are now absolute classic horror films. Freddie Krueger, Jason, Mike Myers, Chucky, Pinhead (of course) - the list goes on of the nasties that stalked my boyhood dreams. Jaws was for me, as for so many people, a seminal work too. Fear has always fascinated me, as a potent force, not even just in terms of horror movies, but generally as a governor of our lives. A lot of horror movies just plug straight into that primal emotion, which is something I think should be faced and conquered.

Q: Where did the idea for Umbrage: The First Vampire come from? Were you inspired by any other vampire movies?

DC: I've always been a vampire fanatic. At one point I think there were hardly any vampire films I hadn't seen, until Twilight probably! One of my other great teenage romances was with Hammer films, and the vampire ones were always the best. Granted, there may have been an adolescent yearning for those heaving bosoms and a teenage boy's desire to have the same command over them as Christopher Lee's Dracula. But it's no secret - there is something unashamedly sexy about vampires. The main birth of Umbrage though, was the cowboy-vampire figure, Phelan. I had for some time been carrying this character around in my head. We're like big kids, us filmmakers, really: it's like I had these two favourite toys, horror and western, and I just wanted to mash them together. It's not completely original, I know, but I just wanted to cross a cowboy with a vampire. Vampires can sometimes be a little effete, but add a gruff cowboy veneer to that and you have a whole different kettle of fish.

Of course when you have an (anti)hero like that - you need some kind of adversary. I kind of stumbled across the whole Lilith thing through a number of sources, and always like the idea of strong females in stories, so the rest just fell into place. And while you're being playful like that, what more obvious scenario to have as a backdrop than a dysfunctional family in the middle of nowhere?! Oddly enough though, despite my love of vampire films and mythology, I kind of ignore a lot of conventions in this film. The word 'vampire' is never used, though it comes playfully close at one point. There are no crosses, no garlic, no bats, and no traditional way of killing them.

Q: Doug Bradley has won rave reviews for his role in the movie, how did you go about casting him?

DC: Doug was such an obvious choice to top the wish-list really. In terms of horror icons, he and Robert Englund are the only people to have played the same character eight times! As a homegrown talent, that makes Doug the UK's most iconic horror actor. Add to that my own love of Clive Barker's work, and it became a no brainer really. Pinhead was, to me, one of the most genuinely fearsome creations ever to walk the screen. There was just something so damn relentless about Hellraiser. It was true horror. As to how he ended up being cast... mercifully it was fairly straightforward. I contacted his agent, he read the script, expressed an interest, and we met up. We went for a pint at Victoria station, and I had to get the whole fanboy thing out of the way quickly. After that we just got on. Whatever I said, it must have given him enough confidence in me that he agreed to do the film. And boy, was I thrilled.

Q: Was the rest of the movie easy to cast?

DC: Jonnie Hurn (Phelan) had been cast from an early stage. I pretty much knew he would play Phelan just from talking to him, which is odd, since he's not Irish, nor a vampire or a cowboy. It was just one of those moments where you see something with complete clarity. I also met Grace Vallorani that same and was impressed with her, so she became a fairly obvious choice for Lauren. I already knew James Fisher and Scott Thomas, and they just kind of clicked with me as a double act. Rita actually answered a casting call for Lilith, but when I'd spoken to her for a while I had to tell her I just didn't see her as being right for that part, but would she be interested in auditioning for the lead, Rachel. That was the toughest part to cast, and I made poor Rita read three times I think. Rachel has a pretty nasty backstory that isn't fully explored in the film, but I wanted it to be in the character. Rita nailed it too. Even when she was freezing cold (boy, was it cold - and her costume wasn-t the warmest!) she did a great job.

Q: Did you have much of a budget to play with?

DC: Not at all. And if it hadn't been for the generosity of so many people, we would never have made what we made. For example, James Friend, the DOP, brought his own RED Camera and shot the film for free. We had to spend some money, obviously, on locations, lights, the 35mm camera that we used for a couple of days for the wild west stuff etc. But so much came for free or ridiculously cheap. Fuji did us seriously proud with film stock, all the cast and crew worked for little or nothing, even Movietech and Panalux gave us spectacular deals on grip and lighting kit. Of course, it helped shooting in winter, but still - there's a lot of people I will be grateful to for as long as I live! Not least the folks invested what budget we did have. The film was entirely funded by private investment, so do these folks a favour and go out and buy the DVD as well as watch it on the Horror Channel!

Q: The movie is the Horror Channel's Film Of The Month, you must be pleased about that?

DC: Of course I am. I am thrilled to bits about it! Umbrage was my first full length feature film as a director, and any feature film is an ordeal to make, from the conception of the idea through the filming and the ardours of post-production. I am a cinephile, and a lover of horror films, so in any way being able to contribute to the canon is a thrill to me. And recognition from a channel dedicated to the genre is something that gives me great pleasure indeed.

Q: Who in your opinion was the greatest on-screen vampire?

DC: You'd think I'd have an answer to that one all ready... My background is as literary as it is filmic, so I'd have to rephrase the question and ask myself who is the greatest vampire. Then it becomes easier, because undoubtedly it is Stoker's historically inspired creation, Dracula. I'm pretty certain that no horror character has been portrayed by more actors than Dracula, so that only narrows it down a little bit! Lugosi of course was great, and I really rate Gary Oldman (hard not to!) in Coppola's film, but I really have to go back to my informative years and my Hammer adolescence and say the mighty Christopher Lee. Happy 90th Birthday, by the way!

Q: So, what other projects are you working on?

DC: I've got a few things at different stages actually. I shot a fairly experimental micro-budget containment thriller called Monk3ys last year, which I could describe as Big Brother meets Saw! It's very much a riff on reality TV, reality in general, and the film industry, and I'm very proud that it picked up an award at last year's Raindance Film Festival. I'm hoping to announce sales/distribution on that very soon. Currently in post-production, I have a film called Black Smoke Rising which is another micro-budget tale, but very different to either Monk3ys or Umbrage. It is a poignant and personal portrayal of grief, told in gorgeous black and white! I'm also in the advanced stages of developing a WW2 psychological thriller about a pair of airmen stranded behind enemy lines. It's kind of 127 Hours meets Buried meets Jacob's Ladder. We've got some fantastic talent lined up for it, both in front of and behind the camera, so watch this space...

A Bronx Tale was Robert De Niro’s directorial debut in 1993. After years of legendary collaborations with Martin Scorsese he finally decided to direct a film and what a very fine film it is. The film came out during a strange time it was post-Goodfellas but sort of pre-Tarantino which is a time when were a quite a few interesting crime films like King of New York, Millers’ Crossing and Menace II Society. A Bronx Tale takes a much old fashion approach.

The story is set in the early 60s and concerns young Italian boy Calogero Anello (Francis Capra) who witnesses a murder committed by local mob boss Sonny (Chazz Palminteri). Sonny eventually offers him a job throwing dice and working in his bar but his father Lorenzo eventually finds out. He returns the money to Sonny and forbids him working for him again.

The film fast-forwards 8 years and Calogero (Now played by Lillo Brancato Jr.) has been working for Sonny without his father’s knowledge. Calogero becomes a member of local gang much to the disapproval of his father. Calogero meets an African-American girl Jade (Taral Hicks) and they decide to go out despite the racism in the area between Italian and African-Americans. The rest of the film deals with the race relations betweens Blacks and Italians and his relationship with Sonny and his father.

The film obviously has been compared to Goodfellas but it’s a much tender and sweeter film and everything works out in the end for the best. The film however is just a fine good telling of an age old story of a boy who gets mixed up with the wrong people and what happens.

All of the cast is really great. It features extremely subtle performance by De Niro as Calogero’s jazz loving bus driving father. It’s very affective scene with him and Sonny discussing the time Sonny offered him a job but he turned it down on moral grounds. It’s also just an extremely well crafted film which is hard to do.

Overall the film is one to cherish and watch every once in a while. It’s also the best thing De Niro has directed.

Short Back And Sides Please: COSMOPOLIS Review

Cosmopolis is the latest film from David Cronenberg and he is back with a bang literally. Cronenberg has in recent years has went a little more conventional with Eastern Promises and the more recent A Dangerous Method. This is fine and good but they lack the weirdness of earlier films like Videodrome, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch and Crash. A quote that explains my indifference to newer Cronenberg is by Hunter S. Thompson “it never got weird enough for me”. I do absolutely love his masterful A History of Violence but besides that it really hasn’t. It’s based on the novel by Don DeLillo, which I literally finished 2 hours before I saw the film.

Cosmopolis tells the story of a day in the life Robert Packer (Robert Pattinson) who is a multi billionaire at least who lives in a massive apartment complex. He simply wants a haircut but the US president in town, a dead rapper’s funeral is in operation, somebody wants him dead and anti-capitalist protests. These events are making New York City even harder to get drive in his huge limo than normal but he insists on having his haircut to the annoyance of his security.

The film is an odyssey into the mind of a man literally on the edge on his sanity who is deliberately losing billions betting against the yen. He meets many people on the way and has numerous sexual encounters with different women on his odyssey. Packer is man without any emotional connection to anything except possibly this special barbershop he must go too.

The film will divide audiences like no other since Southland Tales. A lot of people will simply not get what Cronenberg is trying to do with Cosmopolis, it’s basically a piece of science fiction without any SF. One of the reasons Robert Pattinson may have been casted as Packer is because he is basically a vampire. One of the key lines in the film is “your already dead” which is Parker is a nutshell. Packer is the image of capitalism psychosis in work, he has no interest in money at this point he just buys stuff cause he can. He risks his clients and his money simply for the fact he can. This makes in a way a lot more similar to something in tone to Crash which deals with a similar themes (lack of emotion connection and a world and people on the brink of self destruction) and is also a sci-fi film but not. They both also feature the majority of the scene time in a car and Croneberg is a well-known gearhead.

The film is extremely relevant especially in the aftermath of a post-2008 financial crisis world even the novel was written in 2003. Parker is deliberately committing financial suicide because he doesn’t care anymore and is already dead so to speak. There are anti-capitalist protests, which Parker gets caught up in and in a way Parker gets off on this. He wants the destruction of mankind and also he meets his match to speak figuratively and literally in the climax of the film.

The film and specifically the limo is utterly artificial looking throughout which certainly brings to mind some of the artificial backgrounds of eXistenZ. The background of NYC looks otherworldly and utter fake but this is the point, it’s deliberately alienating. Pattinson’s world in his limo (he works there, he fucks there, he eats there) and most of the film’s action takes place there.

The language will also turn a lot of people off. Like so many things in the film it’s deliberately off putting, it’s very wordy and very unrealistic but that’s the intent and it’s taken pretty much word for word from the novel. It’s about people isolated from the outer world and become increasing interested in themselves and themselves only and after all he wants the most vain thing a damn haircut.

Robert Pattinson is quite astonishing the role as Packer, he is ice cold and inhumane in the best possible way and almost alien like as in David Bowie in The Man Who Fell To Earth. He perfectly captures the psychosis of a man who has everything but wants nothing except he has a death wish. The supporting cast is very fine throughout with Paul Giamatti and Juliette Bincohe as highlights.

I don’t think the film will have a wide audience but very Cronenberg films have one except for The Fly. Twilight fans will obviously not understand it one bit and will be turned off by which was evident in my screening I attended. Critics have been completely mixed even though a lot have praised Pattinson’s turn. I think it’s a truly fascinating but deliberately artificial film about a man’s descend into pure unadulterated nihilism but no the cheerful entertaining nihilism of Fight Club but something much more sinister. After a string of very fine films recently I think I may have found an early contender for film of the year. A lot will hate but if you can get what Cronenberg is trying to do you will be engrossed even with it's deliberately alienating cinematic devices.

Film4 FrightFest The 13th announces opening and closing night films

Paul Hyett’s claustrophobic, psychological horror, THE SEASONING HOUSE is set to open this year’s Film4 FrightFest. Starring Sean Pertwee, Kevin Howarth and Rosie Day, this hard-hitting exploration of war-time sexploitation, set in a Balkan brothel, marks special-effects guru Hyett’s directorial debut. Hyett and the cast will be attending the premiere on Thurs August 23.
Film4 FrightFest will close with the world premiere of Lionsgate’s TOWER BLOCK. Directed by James Nunn and Ronnie Thompson, this is a stunning suspense shocker. Trapped on the top floor of their run down East End home, a disparate group of neighbours are being targeted by a mystery sniper. This taut gripper stars Sheridan Smith, Jack O’Connell and Russell Tovey.
